Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The capital of France, Paris, which hosted the Olympics in 1900 and 1924, is easily recognised by the Eiffel tower, designed by Gustave Eiffel. However, Eiffel's ancestors changed the surname. If this had not happened, what might we be calling the tower today?

Answer: Bonickhausen Tower

Eiffel, whose surname was changed because the French found it difficult to pronounce, lived from 1832 to 1923. He designed many sculptures and suchlike, including the framework of the Statue of Liberty, which was gifted from France to the USA in 1886, but he is most famous for the tower named after him.
2. St. Louis, USA, was never intended to hold the 1904 Olympics. Originally, the city of Chicago was to host the games, but they were moved to St. Louis to coincide with the World's Fair being held there that year. Can you tell me which monarch of France the city in Missouri is named after though?

Answer: Louis IX

Louis lived from 1215 - 1270. When he became king he was just 11 years old, but Blanche of Castile, his mother, served as his regent.
3. St. Moritz held the Winter Olympic games twice: first in 1928 and next 20 years later in 1948. In which Swiss canton is St. Moritz situated?

Answer: Graubunden

In total, there are 26 cantons of Switzerland. St. Moritz itself is located in Switzerland's picturesque Engadine Valley.
4. In 1928, Amsterdam hosted the Summer Olympics. This city is the capital of the Netherlands, true or false?

Answer: True

Contrary to what many think, Amsterdam is indeed the capital city of the Netherlands. There is often confusion over this issue; whilst The Hague is the seat of government for the nation, the capital is Amsterdam, as this was specified in the constitution of the Netherlands.
5. The capital city of Norway, staged the Winter Olympics in 1952. What is this city?

Answer: Oslo

The city was called Kristiania from 1878 to 1924, when its name reverted to Oslo. As well as being the capital, the city is the largest in the Kingdom of Norway.
6. The host city of the 1988 Winter Olympic Games was the city of Calgary. The city is served by its own airport, Calgary International Airport. What is the IATA code for this airport (the code found on airline tickets etc.)?

Answer: YYC

On the list of the busiest airports in the nation of Canada by aircraft movement, Calgary International Airport ranks third.

Calgary is a large city with just over a million people in western Canada. Although it is not the capital city of Alberta, it is the largest city in this province.
7. The 1972 Summer Olympics, were staged in Munich. On which river does the German city stand?

Answer: Isar

These games were marred by the acts of the Palestinian terrorist group Black September, when they kidnapped and later killed eleven Israeli athletes. However, the Games did produce some sporting success, and even included the setting of a new world record in Men's Swimming.

The Bavarian city of Munich is immersed in history, and is situated just north of the Bavarian Alps. The word "Munchen", German for Munich, can be literally translated as "Monks". This is reflected in the city's coat of arms, which consists of the image of a monk.
8. The 1960 Winter Olympics was located in Squaw Valley, California. Near which lake is the resort situated?

Answer: Lake Tahoe

Shasta Lake is much further north than Squaw Valley, and the other two options aren't even in California! Winnemucca is in the state of Nevada, and Lake Owyhee is in Oregon.
9. A highly cultural city in the People's Republic of China, Beijing was in 2001 elected to be the host of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. Now the capital of China, Beijing is also one of the four "Great Ancient Capitals of China". Which of the following is not one of the other great ancient capitals?

Answer: Shanghai

Although Shanghai is the largest city today in the PROC, it has never been the capital city of China.

Beijing is one of the many cultural centres of the far east, and, as China's third most populous city, is home to many modern skyscrapers and high-rise buildings in addition to many historical buildings such as the Forbidden City and other famous tourist destinations like Tianamen Square.
10. Turin, in northern Italy, hosted the 2006 Winter Olympics. The city is known as the automobile capital of Italy because of the fact that a major car manufacturer has its headquarters here. Which company is this?

Answer: Fiat

'FIAT' is an acronym standing for 'Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino', or, in English, the 'Italian Car Factory of Turin', and the word 'Fiat' means 'let there be' in Latin. Lamborghini is based in Sant'Agnata Bolognese, a village situated near the Italian city of Bologna, whilst Ferrari has its HQ in Maranello. Mazda is a Japanese company.

The capital city of the Piedmont region of northern Italy, Turin is built on the banks of the River Po, and has its origins in the Roman Times. 'Torino', the Italian name for Turin, literally means little bull, and therefore the city's flag and seal have the image of a bull.
