quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Kuwaiti women only received a specific right in 2005, one which many women around the world take for granted. In the United States, women received this right with the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.

Answer: Right to Vote

Although the previous Amir His Highness Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah had tried to pass the law in 1999, it took until 2005 for the Parliament to approve the ruling. The vote was 35 for, 25 against, and one abstaining from voting.
2. In Kuwait, the men wear something called a dishdasha (which is usually white) in the hot summer months. In the winter, dishdashas are usually made from wool and are in dark colors. What is a dishdasha?

Answer: Long Robe-like outfit

Although Western countries wear less clothing when they get hot, in the desert countries, wearing more, loose clothing actually keeps people cooler. The subtle differences in the collar, cuffs, and general design of the dishdasha can give hints as to which Arabian Gulf country the wearer is from.
3. Although it is a very traditional country in many ways, Kuwait has embraced modern conveniences as well. The annual camel races are definitely an event to see if you visit during the spring season. In February of 2006, the races were held using a specific kind of modern technology - designed to make the races more humane. What was this new technology?

Answer: Remote-controlled robot jockeys

World Human rights organizations had long condemned the use of the small boys (many times purchased from poor Asian and African countries) as jockeys on the camels for the races. The advent of the remote-controlled robot jockeys has made the Arabian Gulf countries impose strict fines on races using child jockeys now.

The racing track has a special area where the camel trainers drive small pick-up trucks around behind the camels, yelling orders and using the robot-jockey's whip through the remote control.

The robots are about the size/weight of a small boy, and are generally painted and decorated to look like little people (they kind of look like giant Lego people).
4. In order to dress properly, all Kuwaiti men and women must shop! A world-renowned shopping mall opened in 2007. It received recognition for having the largest advertising billboard in the world in 2006 - before it even opened! What is its simple, English name?

Answer: The Avenues

The Avenues opened in 2007, boasting the largest Ikea in the Middle East, as well as over 150 internationally known brand-name shops.

The billboard lined the 5th Ring Motorway for nearly 1/2 a mile. As the mall was being built behind the billboard, the board was slowly removed to reveal the areas of the mall as they were completed and open for business.
5. If you visit, you will see that most women cover their hair with a scarf. This scarf is known to many foreigners as the "hijab". When translated from Arabic, hijab doesn't mean head scarf. So what IS the meaning of the word "hijab"?

Answer: To Hide or Separate

The interesting thing about the word Hijab is that it does not mean scarf. In its simplest sense, hijab means to hide or cover; in Islam, women and men are both supposed to dress "hijab", conveying the meaning that they should be modest in their dress. It is the advent of translations and misunderstandings from non-Arabic speakers that the word has melded into the meaning of "headscarf".
6. Islam is the main religion of Kuwait and is very easy to convert to - you must simply recite your "shahada" and you are Muslim! But what IS the shahada?

Answer: Professing that Allah is the only God, and Mohammad is the Messenger of Allah

There are a lot of misunderstandings about what Islam is, but in Kuwait, there are several non-profit organizations that work with non-Muslims to educate them on Islam. If you want to convert, that is wonderful news, but it is not expected. One such organization is the AWARE center for Arab/Western relations and education.
7. The Kuwait Telecommunications Tower was built as the tallest structure in Kuwait when it was planned and constructed in the early 1990s. It has been renamed. What is its new name?

Answer: Liberation Tower

After the invasion by Iraq, and the subsequent liberation of Kuwait by the US and UN forces, the tower was renamed. Although the Liberation Tower had a revolving restaurant and observation platform, the whole Tower has been closed to the public for quite some time. The Liberation Tower is the one of the tallest towers in the world, at 1220 feet (to the pinnacle).
8. We are being served a drink in small cups with no handle...and it is a yellowish-gold color, and tastes a bit like cardamom! What is this hot drink that our Kuwaiti host is handing us?

Answer: Arabic Coffee

The term Arabic, actually refers to the way the coffee is prepared. Arabic coffee really seems to be a drink that you must develop a taste for! It is really nothing like what most Americans think of as coffee!
9. The only real surviving TRADITIONAL Kuwaiti handicraft is called Sadu, which is generally created in the colors of red and black. What is Sadu?

Answer: Traditional Weaving

It is sad that the traditional weaving is really an art-form that seems like it may be lost - many of the younger girls have more interest in their cell phones and Paris fashion than old traditional weaving. Hopefully, enough of them will take an interest and keep the tradition alive for future generations!
10. Kuwait has been a member of the United Nations since shortly after their complete independence from a particular European country. What country was Kuwait a protectorate of until June 1961?

Answer: Great Britain

Although Kuwait was under the protection of Great Britain, it was never a colony. When Kuwait joined the UN, they were the 111th country to join. It is a good thing they joined, since the UN aided Kuwait when they were invaded by Iraq in 1990.
