Answer: Donegal and Monaghan

It shares borders with Donegal to the west and Monaghan to the south. It also shares borders with the Northern Ireland counties of Londonderry and Fermanagh. Near Coalisland it has a shore on Lough Neagh.

Answer: Peatlands

That area is Peatlands. Peat is laid down over thousands of years as plants die down and are compressed. It varies from area to area according to which plants grew in the area. It has long been used as fuel and also produces a very fertile acidic soil.
3. What is the highest mountain in County Tyrone?

Answer: Mt Sawel

Mt. Sawel is the highest mountain in the Sperrins At 678m (2224ft) and is on the border of County Tyrone and County Londonderry. It is mainly limestone and is popular with hill walkers.
The other three mountains are also in the Sperrins.
4. What is the county town of County Tyrone?

Answer: Omagh

Omagh replaced Dungannon as county town in 1768.
Omagh may be one of the oldest towns in Northern Ireland as there was an abbey on the site in the 8th century. I grew up around the River Strule and is subject to flooding. Walls have been built to prevent the river from overflowing.

Answer: River Blackwater

The river Blackwater rises near Dungannon and flows into Lough Neagh. It is a good fishing river with coarse fishing, especially bream. There is some salmon.

It is Gortin Glen Forest Park. it was opened in 1969 and is a coniferous forest originally planted for timber. There is a five mile drive with spectacular views.
7. What was mined in County Tyrone?

Answer: Coal

Coal was mined during the 18th and 19th centuries and in fact the last mine only closed in 1970.
The mining led to a canal being built to carry the coal from Coalisland via the River Blackwater to Lough Neagh. This canal was closed in about 1954.
Some lignite was mined at Coagh and a small quantity of gold has been found in the Sperrin Mountains.
8. Near Omagh is an outdoor museum. What does it commemorate?

Answer: Emigration from Northern Ireland to America

The Ulster American Folk Park is set in three parts. The first shows scenes of life in Northern Ireland. Then you move into an area representing the ships the emigrants travelled on. This is a claustrobic experience with models of people living three or more to a bunk and a sound track of the noises of the ship, children crying etc.
When you leave that you are in the New World with houses showing the new lifestyle.
It also holds exhibitions relevant to the time and area.
9. A reminder of the linen industry is the Wellbrook Beetling Mill near Cookstown. What is Beetling?

Answer: A process in the finishing of linen

Beetling is part of the finishing of linen. The fabric is beaten with heavy weights which produce a glaze.
Wellbrook Beetling Mill is a water powered mill, now owned by the National Trust and open to the public with demonstrations of the process.

Answer: Pomeroy

The centre of the province of Ulster is near the market town of Pomeroy, about 14 miles east of Omagh.
