Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these choices is the tallest mountain in Hawaii? (Hint: From base to summit, it's also the world's tallest!)

Answer: Mauna Kea

According to the 1995 Guinness Book of Records (p. 147), "The world's tallest mountain measured from its submarine base (3,280 fathoms) in the Hawaiian Trough to its peak is Mauna Kea...with a combined height of 33,480 ft., of which 13,796 ft. are above sea level." That's right, Mauna Kea starts from the bottom of the ocean.
2. The world's most active volcano is on the island of Hawai'i. What is its name?

Answer: Kilauea

Kilauea has been erupting continuously since Jan. 3, 1983 (over 20 years!). A 12 acre lava bench, formed when the lava hit the ocean and cooled, collapsed spectacularly in Sept. 2005, reminding us of the power of nature.
3. What is the claim-to-fame of Mt. Wai'ale'ale on the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i?

Answer: highest rainfall levels in the world

They don't call Kaua'i the Garden Island for nothing. In 1982, 666 inches of rain fell on that lush, misty peak!
4. Hawaii is home to the only royal palace in North America. Name it.

Answer: 'Iolani Palace

Built by King Kalakaua in 1883, 'Iolani Palace stands testament to the fact that the Hawaiian Islands were once an independent kingdom before being overthrown by American and European business interests in 1893 and annexed to the United States.
5. What historical precedent did Gov. George Ariyoshi (1976-1986) set?

Answer: first governor of Japanese ancestry in the U.S.

As a matter of fact, Gov. Ariyoshi was the first Asian-American governor elected in the United States.
6. Which of the following statements about Governor Benjamin Cayetano (1994-2002) of Hawaii is TRUE?

Answer: first governor of Filipino ancestry in the U.S.

The first governor of Native Hawaiian ancestry was Gov. John Waihee III (1986-1994). His Lieutenant Governor was Cayetano. Hawaii truly is a multicultural society.
7. Ka Lae, on the island of Hawai'i, is considered the southernmost point in the United States. What natural feature can be seen by hiking down to its shoreline?

Answer: green sand beach

A beach of jewels! That's right, the green comes from crystals of olivine (a green mineral) that were left by old lava flows and have been broken down over time, forming a glittering green shore.

Hawaii also has black sand and red sand beaches. Most of the rainbow beaches are due to the volcanic nature of our island archipelago.
8. There are over 1250 of these in the U.S., but a record 312 are in the state of Hawaii, including the Nene goose, giant lobelia, and insect-eating caterpillar. Because of this, Hawaii is often called the "______ ______ Capital of the World."

Answer: Endangered Species

Hawaii's unique environment is extremely sensitive to outside change. Destruction of habitat and the import of alien species is accelerating the disappearance of native plants and animals. Efforts are underway to preserve native ecosystems and educate visitors and residents about them.
9. Native Hawaiians have their own Polynesian language, which just happens to have the world's shortest alphabet. How many letters, including the glottal stop ('), are in this alphabet?

Answer: 13

A, E, I, O, U, H, K, L, M, N, P, W, and the glottal stop ('). Such a short alphabet, yet they still have names like Kalaniana'ole, Kauikeaouli, and Lili'uokalani!
10. On Thursday, May 8, 2003, the Hawaii Foodbank set a world record for building a wall of canned goods. Which canned good (which Hawaii locals eat more of per capita than any other state) was collected to make this wall?

Answer: Spam

3,909 cans of Spam were collected to help fight hunger in the islands. Hawaii even has the world record for the longest Spam musubi, a Japanese style rice ball topped with a slice of that luncheon meat.
