1. Where is the source of the River Thames?

Answer: Cotswold Hills

Traditionally the Thames starts its over two hundred mile journey to the sea at Thames Head, Gloucestershire. However, there is no definite source as there are several springs in the area which feed the fledgling river.
2. Leaving Gloucestershire the Thames flows across the north of Wiltshire and into Oxfordshire and through the city of Oxford. The river has a different name for this part of its course. What is this name?

Answer: Isis

Oxford, the city of 'dreaming spires', is an industrial town as well as a university town. However, it is best known for university, the oldest in England and one of the world's oldest. The river Cherwell joins the Thames at Oxford and is crossed by the well known Magdalene Bridge. The name Isis may be a corruption of the name Ouse.
3. Leaving Oxford the Thames flows on through the English countryside to the town of Abingdon. What does this town claim to be?

Answer: The oldest town in England

Abingdon was a settlement during the Bronze and Iron Ages. It was a town when the Romans occupied England. In the early 19th century the Wilts and Berks canal was built and Abingdon became alink for traffic between London, Birmingham and Bristol. With the coming of the railways the canal fell into disuse. Abingdon is now in Oxfordshire although it was once the country town of Berkshire. Colchester also claims the title of oldest town.

There are eight rowers plus the cox. The race takes place between Putney and Mortlake, over a distance of four and a quarter miles.

The conquering Romans were the first to build a bridge at the place they called Londonium. Many more bridges were built later. There have been several London bridges, one of which was transported to Lake Havasu City, Arizona in the 1960s.

Answer: Queen Elizabeth II Bridge

The last bridge used to be Tower Bridge, but now it is the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge which was opened in 1991. It connects the county of Kent with the county of Essex.

The Thames barrier was built to prevent flooding. It was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1984. It is in the Greenwich area as are the Millennium Dome and the old Royal Naval College. The name Greenwich is known world wide as the prime meridian passes through Greenwich and the world's clocks are based on GMT - Greenwich mean time.

Answer: North Sea

It is said that the North Sea is the busiest shipping area in the world. Not only does shipping heading or coming from the Thames sail through the North Sea, but also shipping going to or coming from the Rhine and the Elbe. Shipping heading for Scandinavia and eastern Russia also has to go through the North Sea.
