1. What name do Germans have for Germany?

Answer: Deutschland

Allemagne is French, the Italians would call it Germania and Alemania is what the Spanish would use.

Germany is officially the Federal Republic of Germany or Bundesrepublik Deutschland.

It has the largest population of any country in the European Union with more than 82 million people.

The country was divided after WWII into two separate states - East Germany and West Germany.

Reunification did not occur until 1990.

Suiza is Spanish.

Switzerland is officially the Swiss Confederation. The country's four official languages are:

German - Schweizerische Eidgenossenschaft
French - Confédération Suisse
Italian - Confederazione Svizzera
Romansh - Confederaziun Svizra

It is also known as Confoederatio Helvetica in Latin.

Switzerland is a neutral country - its last war was in 1815.

It is also a very rich country. It claims the two highest ranking cities in the world for the highest quality of life - Zürich and Geneva.

The French call her Autriche, Avusturya is Turkish and Rakousko is what the Czechs would say.

Austria's official name is the Republic of Austria - Republik Österreich.

In 1938 the Anshluss occurred and Hitler annexed Austria into the Third Reich and it ceased to exist.

The Soviets took Vienna on 13 April 1945 and she seceded from Germany.

However, she did not regain her independence, she was divided into four zones -British, French, Soviet and US and governed by the Allied Commission for Austria.

On 15 May 1955 Austria signed a treaty with her occupying powers and regained full independence.

An act of parliament at this time declared Austria to be 'permanently neutral.'

Answer: Espańa

Spagna is Italian, the French call her Espagne and Espanha is what you would hear in Portugal.

The Kingdom of Spain - Reino de Espańa - is on the Iberian Peninsula in south west Europe.

It is a constitutional monarchy.

Spanish territories are the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands and two cities, Ceuta and Melilla, in North Africa.
5. The Portuguese refer to their country as Portugal but what do they call their republic?

Portogallo is Italian, you would hear Portugalia in Poland and Portugalsko in the Czech Republic.

República Portuguesa - Portuguese Republic - is below and to the west of Spain on the Iberian Peninsula.

It is the most westerly country on Europe's mainland.

The country has been continuously settled since the prehistoric ages.

Portugal's empire in the 15th and 16th centuries placed it as a world political, economic and cultural power with territories in Asia, Africa and South America.

Macau was her last overseas territory and she handed it back to China in 1999.

Pologne is French, the Spanish call her Polonia and you would hear Polen if you were in Germany.

The Republic of Poland - Rzeczpospolita Polska - is in Central Europe.

In 1025 Poland became a kingdom which lasted until 1569 when she united with Lithuania to become the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

This collapsed in 1795 and she was split up among Austria, Russia and Prussia.

She regained full independence after WWI in 1918 only to become occupied by the Germans and Russians in WWII - during which she lost over six million of her population.

After the war she became a socialist republic in the Eastern Bloc.

When communist rule was overthrown in 1989 she formed her present constitution which is known as the Third Polish Republic.

Belgium is on the boundary of Latin and Germanic Europe so both cultures flourish.

There are two major language groups - the Flemish (Dutch) and the Walloon (French) but also a smaller group of people that speak German.

Thus the Kingdom of Belgium is officially known as:

Koninkrijk België - Dutch.
Royaume de Belgique - French.
Königreich Belgien - German.

Belgium is a founding member of the European Union and the EU headquarters are located in the country.

It also houses many other large international organisations - NATO being one of these.

The Kingdom of Sweden - Konungariket Sverige - is one of the Nordic countries on the Scandinavian Peninsula in Northern Europe.

It is a Constitutional monarchy and Parliamentary democracy.

Sweden became a large world power in the 17th century with the formation of the Swedish Empire but most of these territories were lost in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Finland was the eastern half of Sweden until it was lost to Russia in 1809.

Sweden has not been at war since 1814 and has been a neutral country since that time.

Dinamarca is Spanish, Dánsko is Czech and you would hear Danemark in France.

Officially named the Kingdom of Denmark - Kongeriget Danmark - it is in Scandinavia in Northern Europe.

It consists of Jutland (a large peninsula), several large islands and the Danish Archipelago which contains hundreds of smaller islands.

It borders both the North and the Baltic Seas and is situated in a position where it is able to control the entry to the Baltic.

Denmark is a Parliamentary democracy and Constitutional monarchy. On 14 January 1972 Queen Margrethe II became the first female Danish Sovereign.

Her son Frederik, the Crown Prince, married Mary Elizabeth Donaldson in 2004.

Princess Mary was born and raised in Australia. They met at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
