Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Situated in the Mount Arthur region of New Zealand, what is the name of the southern hemisphere's deepest cave system?

Answer: Nettlebed

Nettlebed drops 889 metres below its upper entrance, with over 27km of passages. Mt Arthur is a caver's paradise with the Ellis Basin system reaching 775 metres, whilst HH Cave and the Incognito-Falcon systems both exceed 500 metres depth.
2. In its recorded history, Auckland has never had snow fall.

Answer: False

This happened just once on 27 July 1939, during what is regarded as the worst ever snowstorm in NZ's history - 5cm of snow lay on Mt Eden, whilst the Bombays glistened white. Snow even fell on the lighthouse at the top of North Cape.
3. This tourist destination is nestled on a supervolcano, which in 181AD had one of the world's most violent eruptions in the last 5000 years.

Answer: Lake Taupo

Lake Taupo is a caldera formed by a dormant volcano. The 181AD eruption is believed to have ejected 100 cubic kilometres of material, and is recorded as turning the skies red over Rome and China. Taupo volcano has erupted 28 times in the last 27,000 years.
4. In 1855, this 8+ magnitude quake raised sections of the New Zealand coastline by over 2 metres.

Answer: Wairarapa

The Wairarapa quake ruptured along a 120km fault-line. In downtown Wellington the earthquake meant that the former harbourside street of Lambton Quay is now some 250m from the current shoreline.
5. On 7th February 1973, this town reached NZ's hottest ever recorded temperature - 42.4°C.

Answer: Rangiora

The same temperature was also recorded on this day in Jordan, Marlborough. The great drought of '73 resulted in severe water shortages, causing power-blackouts and even TV cutbacks in order to save electricity. Sounds familiar to those living in present day NZ.
6. In a geothermal area formed after the Tarawera eruption, this geyser was the world's tallest.

Answer: Waimangu

Waimangu or 'black water' geyser lived fast and died young, with regular shows in 1900-1904. Muddy water and rock eruptions to 150 metres were common, with occasional mega-shows to 460 metres - comfortably taller than the Empire State Building (448m including antenna). Waimangu is also responsible for the world's worst geyser tragedy, when 4 tourists were killed by a sudden eruption in 1903.
7. Which South Island town set a cold temperature record in July, 1903?

Answer: Ranfurly

Ranfurly is a small town 110km north of Dunedin. The temperature of -25.6C (-14.1F) was recorded on July 17, 1903.
8. Also in the Waimangu Valley, this lake is allegedly the world's largest hot water spring (55 °C).

Answer: Frying Pan Lake

This steaming lake covers approximately 38,000 sq.m, and fills a crater resulting from the 1886 Tarawera eruption. Temperatures peak at 200°C in its bubbling depths.
9. This beach has what is reputedly the longest left-hand surf break in the Southern Hemisphere.

Answer: Manu Bay

Bruce Brown's 1966 surfer movie 'Endless Summer' featured this famous break, which can yield rides of up to 2kms under favourable conditions.
10. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this is the oldest National Park in New Zealand.

Answer: Tongariro National Park

With about 796 sq.km, this park was founded in 1887, after a gift by the influential Maori chief Te Heuheu Tukino IV (Horonuku). The park includes the three active volcanoes, Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. Ruapehu is the North Island's most popular ski area, albeit one occasionally interrupted by Ruapehu's eruptive tendencies.
