Answer: The Free State of Bavaria

Bavaria is in the south of Germany and borders Austria and the Czech Republic. Bavaria was a kingdom in its own right until 1918, when it became part of Germany.
2. In what year was the Allianz Arena completed?

Answer: 2005

The Allianz Arena took less than three years to build and was opened in June 2005. It is located in Munich-Frottmaning. The football governing body will only let World Cup matches be played in stadiums that have been up and running for at least one year before the big match.
3. If you went to the Hofbrauhaus what sort of place would you be going to?

Answer: A brewery/pub

The Hofbrauhaus is a very famous and very traditional Bavarian brewery/pub that opened in 1589. Inside there is an Oompah Band that plays traditional Bavarian songs and wears lederhosen, a traditional Bavarian dress. It is in Munich city centre.
The big science museum is the 'Deutsches Museum.'
4. Why was the 'Schloss Nymphenburg' built?

Answer: To celebrate the birth of an heir to the throne

The 'Schloss Nymphenburg' which is a huge castle just outside of Munich city centre, was built in 1664 to celebrate the birth of the heir to the throne of Bavaria. The original building was added to in the 17th 18th and 19th centuries to include servants quarters. The descendants of the Bavarian Royal family still live in a section of the castle, whilst the rest is open to the public.
5. What is the name of the German underground railway?

Answer: U-Bahn

The S-Bahn is the German overground, Gehen is the verb 'to go' and Schreiben is the verb 'to write.'
The idea of the U-Bahn was to get people living just outside a city into a city or vice versa as quickly as possible.
The S-Bahn is for people living further out.
6. Which mobile phone company comes from Munich?

Answer: Siemens

Siemens has two headquarters, one in Munich and one in Berlin. It was founded in 1847 by Werner Von Siemens. In 1848 the company built the first long distance telegraph line in Europe, which went from Berlin to Frankfurt am Main.
Telefonica is Spanish, O2 is British, and is now owned by Telefonica; Vodafone is also British.
7. Where would you find the 'Neues Rathaus'?

Answer: Marienplatz

The 'Neues Rathaus' is the New Munich town hall, located in Marienplatz in the heart of the city. It was built between 1867 and 1909, as the population was growing and the Old Town Hall could not accommodate everyone.
The Odeonsplatz is where Munich was connected with the old city of Schwabing, there is nothing special in Elisabeth Strasse and I made up Olympiapark Strasse.
8. When did Munich host the Olympic Games?

Answer: 1972

It was in 1972 that Munich hosted the Olympic Games. It was then that some Arab terrorists demanded the release of Arab and German criminals being held in Israeli prisons. They then killed two Israeli athletes and seized nine more. After the negotiations proved unsuccessful the nine hostages were taken to the airport for a flight back to the Middle East.

The police caught up with them and shot three terrorists dead. The remaining terrorists then fought back killing all nine hostages, and one policeman.
9. What is Munich's most highly frequented art gallery called?

Answer: Pinakothek der Moderne

The Pinakothek der Moderne is in Munich and is Germany's biggest museum for art from the 20th century to the present day.
10. Which is the best known symbol of the city of Munich?

Answer: Frauenkirche

The Frauenkirche is the 'Church of Our Lady' and has two tall towers, each with a green dome on the top. The towers take precedence above everything else in Germany.
The Erzbischofliches Palias has been the residence of the Archbishop of Munich and Freising since 1818.
The Gunetzrhainerhaus is a house built in Rococo style situated in Promenadeplatz.
