Nottingham, the county town of Nottinghamshire, lies on the banks of the River Trent. The legendary hero Robin Hood is reputed to have lived in nearby Sherwood Forest.

Nuneaton takes its name from the Benedictine Nunnery around which it grew in the 12th century. The town was a major coal-mining, textiles and munitions centre for many years, but more modern industries such as electronics now predominate.
