Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many of the islands that make up Hawaii are represented on the state flag?

Answer: eight

The Hawaii State flag consists of a Union Jack in the upper left hand corner and eight alternating red and blue stripes, representing the eight major islands of the island chain. They are Hawaii, Maui, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Molokai, Ohau, Kauai, and Niihau.
2. Captain James Cook is credited with being the first European visitor to the Islands, which were "discovered" during his last voyage in the 1800s. When did he join the British Navy?

Answer: 1755

Captain Cook also sailed to Australia and other parts of the Pacific to gather botanical information for the Crown.
3. Ulu is an itrinsic part of Hawaiian food. By what other name is it known?

Answer: Breadfruit

Breadfruit was first brought to the Islands as "canoe food" during long voyages from the South.
4. The constellation the Southern Cross is visible from Hawaii.

Answer: True

It is visible from not only Hawaii but also southern parts of Florida and Texas during the winter months.
5. On which island is the capital city of Honolulu located?

Answer: Oahu

Most people who visit think of Oahu as the "Big Island" because of Honolulu. The "Big Island" of Hawaii dwarfs Oahu by several thousand square miles!
6. True or False: Hawaii is the westernmost state in the United States of America?

Answer: False

Alaska is the westernmost state; the International Date Line does not run a true North-South (or South-North, depending on your point of view), because the outer-most Aleutian Islands would be in tommorow (or today), if the Date Line followed true longitude lines.
7. A very small part of the fiftieth state does not belong to the United States. It belongs to the United Kingdom. What is the name of the Bay that it lies along?

Answer: Kealakekua Bay

This was Captain Cook's final resting place. After his death the Kingdom of Hawaii deeded the land to the United Kingdom. The Australian Navy visits the place once a year to pay remembrance; otherwise it can be viewed from the villiage of Napo'op'oo, or visited by boat.
8. Is Mauna Loa the largest mountain on earth?

Answer: Yes

The largest mountain (by volume) on earth is Mauna Loa. It is an astounding shield-type volcano that is vastly taller than Mount Everest, when its true underwater base is considered.
9. Snakes are native animals on the islands of Hawaii.

Answer: False

Snakes aren't native to Hawaii and the USDA is quite determined to keep snakes out of the state. Part of the motivation for this is the preservation of Hawaii's native flora and flora. The brown tree snake has caused immense damage to the bird life in Guam and officials are keen for this not to be repeated in Hawaii. These snakes have made it to Hawaii after smuggling themselves on aeroplanes but they were spotted on arrival in Hawaii. The blind snake is a small snake which causes little harm and is not a concern but it's not native to Hawaii. It most likely arrived in Hawaii from the Philippines in potting soil in the 1980s or even earlier.

Another reason for not allowing snakes in Hawaii is the potential for their escape during an earthquake, tsunami or even a vicious hurricane. Their cages may break, releasing the snakes into the environment. There are heavy fines for keeping a snake as a pet.
10. This is a common word of welcoming in Hawaii (not in the Hawaiian language), it can be used by locals and visitors alike:

Answer: Howzit

"Howzit" means literally "How is it?". Da Kine means "that kind" which can be applied to anything from drinks to fish. "Aloha", of course, means "Hello", "Gooodbye", and "I Love You". "Hey" is what you say when you're rude!
11. There are only two Royal residences in the United States, both were built when Hawaii was still a monarchy. One is the famed Iolani Palace (think Hawaii Five-O), the other is:

Answer: Hulihe'e Palace

Hulihe'e Palace is located on Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. Pu'uhonua O Honaunau is the famed "Place of Refuge", where many pre-western contact sites may be viewed. Kama 'aina means "long term", and "P'ule P'ule" is what you do when you want some coffee trees for free!
12. Many crops are grown in Hawaii, as are are on the mainland United States. However, there are only TWO that are produced here, and not in the rest of the United States. What are they?

Answer: Vanilla and coffee

While coffee is grown on most of the Islands (after being introduced by missionaries), "Kona" coffee is grown only on the southern part of the Big Island. Vanilla is actually part of an orchid; Hawaii is the only state that produces vanilla as well as coffee. Hawaii is the largest producer of ginger for the United States. Taro (or Kalo) could be produced elsewhere but isn't.
13. When visiting Hawaii, you will often see a "Hang Ten" gesture. What does this mean in local parlance?

Answer: shaka

"Shaka" means the same thing here as a "thank you" wave on the Mainland. it also means "Yeah, Brau", "Hello", and "See later".
14. It is thought that the Hawaiian people first came from an island group many miles to the south. What is the name of this island group?

Answer: Tahiti

Tahiti is the closest major populated island group to the south of Hawaii; from Ka Lea on the Big Island the only land for 2000 miles is Tahiti. That is a long way to paddle!
15. What was the name of the book that was written by a famous American writer about American Servicemen during WWII, and was later turned into a musical?

Answer: Tales of the South Pacific

James Michener did write the other books, but only one was turned into a musical. A lot of what people imagine Hawaii to be actually what they see from this film titled "South Pacific". Hawaii has beautiful places - E Komo Mai - come join us!
