Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Parts of the city of Denver, Colorado have steep hills and valleys, but ask any native what the elevation of the city is in feet, and they will give you an uncannily precise and consistent answer. What is it?

Answer: 5,280 feet

Put away your silly GPS-with-altimeter. It's the Mile High City. Period. Got it? Good.

Despite the undulating terrain, Denver is actually down on the plains. The Great Plains slowly rise up as you travel west of the Mississippi to the point where even the flat land is a mile above sea level.
2. At 345 feet above sea level, this location is the highest point in the whole state, but it is also the lowest high-point of any state in the US. Where is it?

Answer: Britton Hill, Florida

The others are all pretty low too, but low-land and Florida pretty much go hand in hand. A very large portion of Florida, such as the Everglades, is actually right at sea level.

Woodall Mountain, Mississippi rises to 806 feet.
Elbright Azimuth, Delaware sits down at 448 feet.
Driskill Mountin, Louisiana is 535 feet.
3. 'Out in the West Texas Town of El Paso' is the lyric to a classic cowboy song by Marty Robbins. But just 90 miles east of there is the location of a mountain range that accounts for pretty much all of the high elevation topography in the entire state of Texas. What is it called?

Answer: The Guadalupes

The Guadalupe Mountains rise up to 8,749 feet in Texas. If you go, be sure to also visit Carlsbad Caverns to the west in New Mexico, deep under the Guadalupes.
4. The Columbia Ice Field on the Alberta/British Columbia border (Canada) is a very significant geographic location because it lies at the hydrographic apex of North America. This means:

Answer: It is North America's continental divide where water flows out to three different oceans

From this immense ice field, melt-water runs to the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic Oceans. So if you visit, watch what you spill up there. Much of the continent is downstream from you!

The Columbia Ice Field covers over 115 square miles, and is the source of eight glaciers!
5. You live in the desert, down in Albuquerque, New Mexico and want to go skiing. Where is the nearest out-door ski run complete with gondola, lifts, etc.?

Answer: Right there--about 10 miles from downtown

From downtown, you can be up to the top of the slopes on the Sandia Mountains in about an hour, if you time the gondola schedule right.

The Sandia Mountains rise high up over Albuquerque at 10,678 above sea level. The mountains are an ancient barrier reef, and are full of fossils.
6. Big Roundtop and Little Roundtop are both hills located in the Gettysburg battlefield. Little Roundtop played a much more important role during the famous civil war battle. Why?

Answer: Big Roundtop was too heavily forested to use as a vantage point or to move canon

Unlike Big Roundtop just to the south, Little Roundtop was cleared and had a commanding view of much of the surrounding battlefield. The Union army took full advantage of the location, but not without a fight for the high ground.
7. These major rivers all begin high up in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado except one. Which one is it?

Answer: Yellowstone

Both the North and South Forks of the Platte River also originate in Colorado. From a relatively small area near Rocky Mountain National Park, water flows literally north, south, east and west to start some of the most important river systems on the continent.
8. These three US states don't have much to brag about when it comes to high elevations, but they sure know how to do shout-outs to the home crowd. What states claim the following 'titanic peaks' as their highest elevation spots: Hoosier Hill Point, Hawk-Eye Point, and Mount Sunflower?

Answer: Indiana, Iowa, Kansas

Hoosier Point Hill, Indiana is 1,257 feet (maybe a little higher than the vertical leap of some of the state's famous basketball players?). Hawk-Eye Point, Iowa is a little higher than that at 1,670 feet. Mount Sunflower, Kansas is the highest of these at 4,039 feet. But then, Kansas is right next to Colorado, so it had better stay humble in the elevation department.
9. Once you climb out of the Grand Canyon to the North Rim, the terrain becomes relatively flat, but it sure isn't low. How high is the North Rim above sea level?

Answer: 8,000 feet

The South Rim is a pretty level 7,000 feet, but the North Rim is much higher and levels off at 8,000 feet. You want to hike down to the river? Depending on where you walk you need to drop down to about 3,000 feet. And don't forget about the climbing back up part!
10. Of course we need a question about the highest point in the United States. That would be Mt McKinley at 20,320 feet in Alaska. It is also called by the Tanaina Indian dialect word 'Denali'. What, exactly, does Denali mean?

Answer: High One

Denali is indeed the highest point in the US and in all of North America. And what makes it truly spectacular is that the lowlands around it sit at only 2,000 feet. The vertical displacement from mountain-foot to mountain-peak is greater than that of Mt Everest in Nepal!
