Inverness on the east coast of Scotland lies at the mouth of the river Ness which runs from Loch Ness to the Moray Firth, an inlet of the North Sea. Once an ancient fort it is now acknowledged as the Capital of the Scottish Highlands. In 1822 upon completion of the Caledonian Canal Inverness was linked to the west coast of Scotland.

In 2001 the city was officially declared Scotland's newest city.
