Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Meridian Gate in Beijing is the largest gate of which Chinese landmark?

Answer: Forbidden City

The largest gate in the Forbidden City, the Meridian Gate is directly in the center of Beijing, one of China's largest cities (and its capital). Now a museum for the Emperor's palace, the Forbidden City takes on a large number of tourists daily and, to a small extent, has been commercialized as a result.

The Meridian Gate stands at the south end of the area while the north flanks with the Gate of Divine Might facing Jingshan Park. The East and West Glorious Gates, while still in the southern stretch of the Forbidden City, flank the opposite points on the compass. Out the Meridian Gate, you can keep heading south to Tiananmen Square.
2. Gorkhi-Terelj National Park can be found in what landlocked Asian nation?

Answer: Mongolia

Mongolia, the least densely-populated Asian nation, has no coastline but it does boast a rolling expanse of beautiful landscapes. Gorkhi-Terelj National Park is one of its most popular for tourists and it's a short distance northeast of the capital city, Ulaanbaatar. Gorkhi-Terelj can be a spot for adventurers looking for somewhere new to explore; it's a perfect location to go rock-climbing or horseback riding, especially since the area isn't overly-tread.

The nearby city of Ulaanbaatar connects to both China and Russia via the Trans-Mongolian Railway which, in turn, connects to the far-west end of Russia on the Trans-Siberian.
3. Home to floating fishing villages and majestic limestone islets, Ha Long is found in the northern coastal region of what Southeast Asian nation?

Answer: Vietnam

Ha Long Bay, due to its natural beauty, has become a more popular tourist destination over the years, sending people to Northern Vietnam, likely out of Hanoi, the capital city. Considered one of the New Seven Natural Wonders, Ha Long became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the 1990s.

It has since become a site of luxury resorts, floating fishing villages, pearl farming, and amazing caves. The bay area is estimated to contain more than two thousand islets, all made of naturally-eroded limestone.

The name Ha Long translates to 'Descending Dragon' in Vietnamese.
4. The towers depicted can be visited in Doha, the capital city of Qatar.

Answer: False

Wrong country! The towers here are the Kuwait Towers in Kuwait City which, while also in the Middle East, are not in Qatar; the two countries are actually separated by hundreds and hundreds of miles of Saudi Arabian desert and coastline. The towers are one of the most famous monuments in Kuwait reaching, at the most, 187m into the sky.

The three towers found on-site overlook the Persian Gulf and were finished in the late 1970s. Since their completion they've acted as water towers and an observatory.
5. Port Louis, a capital city, can be found on its island nation in what ocean?

Answer: Indian Ocean

One of the tiny island nations in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius is two thousand kilometers from the mainland making it a tropical bit of paradise. Originally settled by the Dutch...and then the French...and then the British, the people of Mauritius have since been independent, later becoming a part of the British Commonwealth. Nonetheless, Mauritius, runs most of its country from the city of Port Louis, one of the most important harbours for hundreds of miles. Experiencing fairly constant, warm temperatures year-round, it is a luxurious vacation destination.
6. The Black Angel of Madagascar stands in the center of what artificial lake in Antananarivo?

Answer: Lake Anosy

A man-made lake in the heart of Antananarivo, Madagascar, Lake Anosy was once swampland, but ended up being formed in the mid-19th century as the city grew up around it. Now, Antananarivo is the capital of the Indian Ocean island nation and it sits nearly smack-dab in the middle of the country. Lake Anosy features a small isthmus and, at the end of that, the Monument aux Morts, also known as the Black Angel (though it was painted white in the twenty-first century), stands.
7. The depicted Olympic Stadium was built for the 1952 Olympic Games in what Scandinavian city?

Answer: Helsinki

The largest stadium in the country, Helsingfors Olympiastadion opened in the late 1930s and was used in the 1952 Summer Games. Since the games, the arena has been used mainly as an entertainment venue for sporting events and concerts of major superstars. One of the more distinctive buildings in Helsinki, the tower which once held the flame can be seen for miles and, from the top, one gets an unparalleled view of the capital resting on the Gulf of Finland.
8. Also known as 'Rodina-Mat', The Mother Motherland is a statue which can be found in what Ukrainian location?

Answer: Museum of the Great Patriotic War

Rodina-Mat stands at sixty-two meters in height (to the tip of its sword) and, interestingly, the monument would have been taller had it not been trimmed down to rise to a lower height than the highest cross on the top of Kiev Pechersk Lavra, an Orthodox Christian monastery. Nonetheless, the statue is the centerpiece of the Museum of the Great Patriotic War, one of the largest and most-visited museums in the country sitting on the Dnieper River in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.
9. What Moroccan mountain range separates the Sahara Desert from the Atlantic Coast?

Answer: Atlas Mountains

Stretching northeast from Southern Morocco and into Algeria and Tunisia, the Atlas Mountains are mostly dry and rocky, blocking most of the rainfall coming off the Atlantic as it moves toward the world's largest desert to the east. The Atlas range is home to many nomadic groups such as the Berbers, but it also contains a number of major Moroccan cities including Ouarzazate, Marrakesh, and Fez.

Some of the mountains in the Atlas range, despite expectation, are snowcapped depending on the season.
10. Sagrada Familia, a religious building which started construction in 1885, was not completed in the nineteenth or twentieth centuries. What city can it be found in?

Answer: Barcelona

Although this church has been more than a century in the making, it's one of the most well-known landmarks in Barcelona, dominating the skyline with its excessive height and style. Considered a UNESCO Heritage Site since 1984, the building sits next to the Placa de Gaudi, also named after the church's designer, just a short distance from the Balearic Sea. Gaudi passed away in 1926, well before it reached any semblance of completion; it was about a fifth of the way to completion at the time.
