Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Mano de Punta del Este, known in English as 'The Hand', is found on the Atlantic Coast in which South American nation?

Answer: Uruguay

Found sinking into the sand on the beaches of Punta del Estes, Uruguay, the Hand in the Sand is one of the most recognizable statues in the country, mainly because of its morbidity. Built by Mario Irarrázabal, it was allegedly meant to depict the last thing someone sees of a drowning person.

This is particularly interesting because the waters off this portion of the Uruguayan coast are some of the choppiest in South America. A similar sculpture, the Mano del Desierto, can be found in the Atacama Desert in Chile.

It was made by the same sculptor. Punta del Estes is only two hours down the coast from Uruguay's capital, Montevideo.
2. Nestled into the mountains of Patagonia, which of these Argentine cities is in the Rio Negro region?

Answer: San Carlos de Bariloche

Bariloche, found in Argentina's oldest National Park (Nahuel Huapi National Park), is mainly a tourist city filled with typical Patagonian buildings and outdoor adventure outlets. Because of the mountains and the lakes nearby, visitors can do everything from extreme biking to paragliding to skiing to boating. Bariloche is also home to numerous chocolate shops; this Andean locale is home to tons of authentic chocolatiers.

The city is only a short drive through the mountains to the Chilean border.
3. Set foot on the Battleship Aurora! This famous naval cruiser was permanently docked in what major city?

Answer: Saint Petersburg

To visit this major landmark of the Russo-Japanese War and the October Revolution, you would need to walk along the Neva River; it's docked along the edge. Decommissioned as an active ship in the 1940s, it was placed in what was then Leningrad after repairs.

The spot is actually just down the street from Peter and Paul Fortress. Would you believe the ship was actually sunk in 1941? It was repaired and permanently moored in 1947.
4. The second-most-visited site in Egypt (only rivaled by the pyramids) is which of these temple complexes in Luxor?

Answer: Karnak

Karnak Temple is one of the largest in all of Egypt. Sitting on the East Bank of the Nile River, it's in Luxor, one of the most significant cities for Egyptian history and culture. Built more than five thousand years ago, Karnak is home to countless monoliths and hieroglyph-laden columns.

The Precinct of Amun Re, for instance, is one of the best-preserved, open-air sites in the country. Luxor is also home to the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens, and the Luxor Temple.
5. Which of these mountains is the tallest freestanding peak in the world?

Answer: Mount Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro stands nearly six thousand meters above sea level and, alone on the African savannah, it can be found on the edge of Tanzania (near the Kenyan border). Also the tallest mountain in all of Africa, the peak has been ascended numerous times.

It's not completely safe to climb (as rock climbing and hiking up such a tall mountain can be dangerous) but it is considerably less dangerous than a snow-covered Himalayan peak. The Furtwängler Glacier atop Kilimanjaro is often much-discussed as its recession is cited as an sign of global warming.
6. This photo of a skyline was taken from atop a seven-star hotel in what city?

Answer: Dubai

The photo was taken from the top of the Burj Al-Arab in Dubai, U.A.E.. The world-famous 'seven-star hotel' is known for being shaped like a sail and sits just off the coast on a man-made island in the Persian Gulf (on Jumeira Beach). Dubai itself is a marvel in terms of architectural prowess.

The tall tower in the center of the photo, the Burj Khalifa, became the tallest in the world when it was completed in 2010. It reaches four-fifths of a kilometer into the sky.
7. Victoria Memorial was built in which city to commemorate the memory of British Queen Victoria?

Answer: Kolkata

Victoria Memorial, constructed in what was then known as Calcutta, was finished in 1921, two decades after the death of Queen Victoria, once the leader of the British Empire and, thus, a great deal of India. Built on the edge of the Hooghly River, the grounds and structure are now used as exhibition space for museum pieces and expansive, lush gardens.

The opulence is impressive, especially since Kolkata, India's third-largest city (including surrounding area), contains over fourteen million people in its metropolitan area.
8. Hell's Gate is a hot spring/geothermal site found on which island nation?

Answer: New Zealand

Hell's Gate, also known as Tikitere, is a site of geothermal activity near the city of Rotorua, New Zealand. Home to many hot-springs and mud baths, the bubbling pits found here make a starkly rough image of the country's otherwise beautiful, lush, and mountainous landscape.

The location is also home to a large, hot-waterfall, one of the largest of its kind in the world, and the muds around the area are considered to have therapeutic qualities.
9. The El Nido region of the Philippines is home to beautiful limestone cliffs. In which part of the island nation can it be found?

Answer: Palawan

Palawan, which is southwest of the capital city of Manila, is a string of islands pointing down towards Borneo; El Nido is a small locale up in the northernmost stretch. Landing between the South China Sea and the Sulu Sea, El Nido is home to gorgeous limestone cliffs and relaxing beaches, making it a luxurious tourist spot.

A protected area, El Nido is also home to marine sanctuaries and ecological reserves. Despite this, it's also a site for adventurers as the cliffs beg for rock climbing.
10. If you were to stop off in the Sunshine Village to peer into the canyons of the Continental Divide, where in Canada would you be?

Answer: Alberta

The Continental Divide exists where the plates forming the Rocky Mountains have collided. Making your way up to the Sunshine Village near Banff National Park and hiking to Lookout Mountain would give the perfect view of the clear path between the peaks which stretches through Canada, down into the mountains of the United States. Banff also happens to be a beautiful tourist spot, home to Lake Louise, the alleged 'Pearl of the Rockies'. Banff, one of the oldest National Parks in Canada, is also a short distance from the British Columbian border, and only an hour's drive from Calgary.
