Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first person to serve as Postmaster General of what is now the United States Postal Service?

Answer: Benjamin Franklin

Benjamin Franklin was appointed on July 26, 1775.
2. Which organization created overnight air service?

Answer: United States Postal Service

It's a common mistake to believe that FedEX created overnight service. The Postal Service has that distinction with its initial Express Mail service between New York and Los Angeles back in 1971. Fred Smith latched onto the idea and ran with it. It is rumored that he added "federal" to Express to give the idea of security. What started as a monopoly in one-day service for the USPS is now down to 7% of the market.
3. What service should be used when sending valuables through the mail?

Answer: Registered Mail

Registered mail is monitored through the system to its completion, which offers more security for valuables.
4. Which form do consumers use when they fear they've lost mail in the system?

Answer: Form 1510

A form 1510 should be completed and given to the Post Office. This information allows for processors to search in particular areas in an attempt to recover the lost piece. Surprisingly, most items are found, including lost payrolls.
5. Where is the largest post office located?

Answer: New York City

The Church St. Station in New York is the largest Post Office, covering one full New York City block.
6. Who appoints the Postmaster General of the United States Postal Service?

Answer: Postal Board of Governors

The nine member Board of Governors recommends and appoints the Postmaster General.
7. Who is responsible for the subjects depicted on stamps?

Answer: The Stamp Advisory Committee

8. What agency protects and monitors the mail?

Answer: The Postal Inspection Service

The Postal Inspectors are highly regarded in their efforts against mail fraud, identity fraud and theft. The movie, "The Inspectors," with Louis Gossett is a fairly good depiction of the work they do.
9. Roughly how many people were employed by the US postal services as of 2003?

Answer: 800,000

The USPS is the nation's largest non-military employer, with over 800,000 on the rolls.
10. What does ZIP in "zip code" stand for?

Answer: Zoning Improvement Plan

ZIP Code came aboard in 1963 to help improve the flow of mail to different parts of the country.
