Answer: The Taiwan Strait

The Taiwan (or Formosa) Strait lies between Taiwan and the Chinese mainland. It runs the entire length of the western Taiwan coast and it averages 90km wide. It connects the South China Sea to the East China Sea. The Sea of Japan is west of the main Japanese islands. The Yellow Sea borders northern China and the Korean peninsula in the east. The Sulu Sea is in the Philippines.

The Dead Sea has its historical roots in the Bible being the birthplace of King Herod. Located in the Jordan Rift Valley, the Dead Sea is over 400 metres below sea level and was so named due to the lack of life living it in. However, there is life in the Dead Sea; it is mainly bacteria and fungi.

The Coral Sea contains the world's largest coral reef, the Great Barrier Reef, now a World Heritage Site, and a tourist destination to those who want to scuba dive, see reef live, and generally know the eco-system. The Weddell Sea was named after a Scottish sailor James Weddell. It has been said that it is the clearest sea in the world, equal to that of distilled water. It is bordered to the east by the Antarctic mainland and to the south west by the Antarctic Peninsula. In the southern part of the sea, the sea is permanently frozen.

The Adriatic Sea borders the east coast of Italy plus the west coasts of Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Albania.
The Ionian Sea borders southern part of the west coast of Albania, west coast of mainland Greece, southern Italy and Sicily to the west.
The Tyrrhenian Sea borders the islands of Corsica and Sardinia and the western coast of Italy.
To the north of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Ligurian Sea borders northern Italy, Monaco and south east coastal France.
The Mediterranean Sea encompasses 18 smaller seas.

Answer: Poland

Other countries with the North Sea lapping their shores are France, Netherlands, Germany and Denmark. Poland is further east, and borders the Baltic Sea.

Both of these small seas lie to the north of Greenland and are usually icebound. The Lincoln Sea also borders Ellesmere Island, in the far north of Canada. Greenland is an autonomous country, partially controlled by Denmark.

Answer: White Sea

The White Sea borders only one country - Russia - and is a southern inlet of the Barents Sea near the Finnish border in north-west Russia.
The Yellow Sea borders three countries, China (northern coast near Beijing) and the west coasts of North Korea and the Republic of Korea.
The Red Sea touches Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea and Djibouti.
The Black Sea borders Turkey, Georgia, Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania.

Answer: Kenya

The Andaman Sea is part of the Indian Ocean. It is bordered by southern Myanmar, western Thailand, and the Straits of Malacca which separate the Malay Peninsula from the island of Sumatra (Indonesia) and the Andaman Islands (which belong to India) to the east.

These were some of the countries to the east of the epicentre that had casualties and physical damage. Countries with casualties to the west of the epicentre include Sri Lanka, India (mainland), Seychelles and east coast African countries such as Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar and South Africa.

Answer: Cuba

The Caribbean Sea is bounded by Cuba, Hispaniola, the Lesser Antilles to the east and Mexico, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama to the west and Colombia and Venezuela to the south. The northern boundary is formed by the Gulf of Mexico which in turn has boundaries with the USA southern coast, the east coast of Mexico to the west and Cuba to the south-east. Only Cuba and Mexico have borders with both bodies of water. Jamaica is an island in the north-west Caribbean Sea.
