Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This Egyptian city, with a 2015 population of over four million, sits astride longitude 30 East. Which coastal city is it?

Answer: Alexandria

Alexandria is the second largest city in Egypt, behind Cairo. It is a large Mediterranean seaport, located on the western part of the Nile River delta.

Cairo, Luxor and Aswan are not coastal- they are all on the Nile River.
2. This country is the setting of Alfred Lord Tennyson's epic poem 'The Charge of the Light Brigade', its capital inspired the name of a chicken dish, and in 1986 a nuclear disaster occurred on its northern border. Russia attempted a usurpation of part of this country in 2014. What country is it?

Answer: Ukraine

Tennyson's poem tells of a one-sided battle in the Crimean War, when the British High Command sent lightly armed cavalry troops (the Light Brigade), into battle against Russian heavy artillery. Most of the 600 troops were slaughtered in the charge.
'Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die'.

Chicken Kiev is named after the Ukrainian capital, but it is not certain that it was created there. Kiev is only a short distance from East 30 longitude.

The nuclear disaster occurred at Chernobyl, not far from the border with Belarus.

While Russia claimed the Crimean peninsula as its own in 2014, Ukraine and the rest of the international community, including the UN, has not recognised the claim.
3. South Africa has three different capitals. Which city, the administrative capital, is closest to longitude 30 East?

Answer: Pretoria

Pretoria is in the north-east of the country, and only about 100kms west of 30 East. The legislative capital, Cape Town, is on the western coast. Bloemfontein, the judicial capital, is close to the centre of South Africa.

Windhoek is not in South Africa; it is the capital of the neighbouring country of Namibia.
4. A large mountain range in Turkey is crossed by 30 East longitude. The highest peak is Mt. Demirkazęk, at 3,756m. What is the name of the range? It shares its name with an astrological star sign.

Answer: Taurus Mountains

The range runs along most of Turkey's Mediterranean coast, and near its border with Syria. It is over 500 kms long, and contains many peaks over the 3,000m mark.
5. Russia is the biggest country on Earth and longitude 30 East goes through its far western extremities. Which city, the largest above the Arctic Circle, is also home to a major naval base?

Answer: Murmansk

In WWII, Murmansk was the landing point of the Arctic convoys, bringing essential supplies to Russia from America and Britain. The German U-Boat wolfpacks ensured that a large proportion of these supplies ended at the bottom of the ocean.

Omsk and Samara are both near Russia's southern border, and Vladivostok is on the far eastern coast.
6. Longitude 30 East crosses this African country, passing through the provinces of Northern, Luapula, Central, Eastern and Lusaka. Which country is it?

Answer: Zambia

The province of Lusaka is home to the national capital, and shares the same name. Zambia and its southern neighbour Zimbabwe were originally named after Cecil Rhodes, as Northern and Southern Rhodesia.
7. The name of this country means 'White Russia'. It is in eastern Europe and borders Russia. What country on longitude 30 East is it?

Answer: Belarus

The 30 East longitude just touches Finland (and also Sweden). 'Finland' is literally 'Land of the Finns', but the origin of 'Finn' is open for debate. Estonia comes from various Scandinavian roots and roughly means 'East-land', whilst 'Poland' comes from a Slavic word meaning 'field'. Poland and Estonia are both to the west of the 30 East line.
8. South Sudan is one of the world's newest countries, breaking away from Sudan in 2011. Does either branch of the Nile River run through South Sudan?

Answer: White Nile only

The White Nile has its source in Lake Victoria, Uganda, and flows northwards, through the South Sudan capital of Juba, and meets the Blue Nile at Khartoum in Sudan. The river runs close to 30E for much of its long journey.
9. As well as passing through several countries, longitude 30 East crosses several significant bodies of water. Which of these is NOT on our imaginary line?

Answer: Persian Gulf

From north to south, it crosses the Arctic Ocean, Barents Sea, Gulf of Finland, Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Lake Tanganyika, the western edge of the Indian Ocean and the Southern Ocean.

The Persian Gulf is approximately 1500 kms to the east of longitude 30 East.
10. Longitude 30 East crosses the Equator near Lake George. Which country, home to the city of Kampala, is this intersection in?

Answer: Uganda

Tanzania borders Uganda to the south, with both having a shoreline on the huge Lake Victoria. Kenya also borders Lake Victoria, but the longitude line does not touch that country, and nor does it touch Mozambique. Kampala is the capital of Uganda.
