Lovely Leeds Trivia Quiz

OK, so it isn't that lovely... or even that nice. It's my home town, though, so here's a very basic quiz on the place, a former industrial centre located in West Yorkshire. And yes, we are bigger than Sheffield.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Every city in the UK has its own two-letter area code system. What is the two letter code given to the areas of Leeds?

Answer: LS

Made up of the first and last letter, the LS prefix comes before the number of the district. Of course, there is no pattern or methodical numbering system. They are completely random, and some number codes stretch for much farther than others.
2. How many separate suburbs of Leeds are there?

Answer: 29

There are (among others) Kippax, Moortown, Alwoodley, Harehills, Burley, Gipton, and Chapeltown. I, personally, live in the Alwoodley area, which falls under the code of LS17, as does Moortown. Slightly greener than the rest of the city.
3. London is the biggest city in the United Kingdom, and has been since it became the capital, and Birmigham is the second city. Canals a go-go. Even though we're in the biggest county (Yorkshire), we are only the ... biggest city. Fill in the gap!

Answer: 3rd

We are now bigger than Manchester, which takes a lot of people by surprise. There is also the competition between Sheffield and Leeds, whereby they claim to be bigger. In reality, they're only the sixth biggest city.
4. Leeds is conjoined onto another city, although it is considerably smaller than Leeds itself. What is the name of this city?

Answer: Bradford

We share the not-so-famous Leeds/Bradford airport, which due to its lack of size, sees most people going to Manchester airport to get a flight. Oldhamd and Salford are both parts of Manchester, and Halifax is a small town near Huddersfield.
5. We have a small airport for such a large city, and as such, there aren't that many flight options. In the same vein as other airport questions on this site, can you answer me this? Which airport is not served by Leeds/Bradford?

Answer: Florence

If you want to get to Florence, Italy, from Leeds airport you'll have to make a connecting flight in another airport. While you can catch direct flights from Leeds to Rome, Milan, Venice, Pisa, Sardinia and Naples from Leeds, you can't go to Florence without making a stop.
6. What was the name for Leeds in the Middle Ages?

Answer: Ledes

The city goes back to the 15th century, and although it has had many names, all have been similar to that of today. Leeds, unlike most other large cities in the UK, does not have a Roman name. It simply did not exist in the time of the Romans.
7. What river is Leeds built on?

Answer: Aire

A misspelling of Air, we also have the river Wharfe which flows through the northernmost suburb of Otley. This frequently floods, and so insurance is always a problem in the small market area.
8. What is the name of the main prison in Leeds?

Answer: Armley

Also the name of a suburb, Armley is the largest of her Majesty's prisons in the north of England. Located near the Royal Amrouries, the prison holds convicts from all areas of Yorkshire and Lancashire.
9. Leeds isn't exactly famous for its culture, and we don't have that much in the way of museums or libraries. We do, however, have one large museum which is used for conferences and occasionally for visitors. It's the Royal Armouries, but what kind of museum is it?

Answer: Historical

It is near the centre of town, and located near the main canal. The main attractions at this museum are the live shows, in which visitors can watch live jousting and other Medieval activites.
10. A hard one to finish with, and probably only answerable for the people of the town. Oh well, good luck! Which of the following shopping facilities would you not find in the centre of the city?

Answer: The White Rose shopping centre

The White Rose shopping centre is an out-of-town facility located on the outskirts of Morley, one of the southern suburbs of the city. The Headrow is in fact not a shopping facility, but the main street in the town centre.
