Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The land area of this island is 260 square miles. This makes Moloka'i the fourth largest of the main Hawaiian islands.

Answer: False

Moloka'i is actually the fifth largest island. The Big Island of Hawai'i is the largest followed respectively by Maui, O'ahu, and Kaua'i. Following Moloka'i in size are the islands of Lana'i, Ni'ihau and Kaho'olawe.
2. There are over a 120 islands within the United States, some fairly large islands and a majority of very small ones. By land area from largest to smallest, what number is Moloka'i?

Answer: 27th

I always thought that Moloka'i was one of the smaller islands but as it turns out there are a lot of islands in the U.S. that are much smaller. Moloka'i follows Alaska's Montague Island at 279 square miles and precedes Alaska's Dall Island at 253 square miles.
3. Moloka'i lies east of O'ahu, the most populous of the eight islands. What is the name of the channel (passage or waterway) that separates the two islands?

Answer: Kaiwi Channel

Every summer there are two (a womens and a mens) annual canoe racing events called the Moloka'i Hoe. More than a 1000 canoe paddlers from around the world gather for this event each year. The start of this event begins around 7.00 am at Hale O Lono Harbor located on the west end of Moloka'i.

It is a 41 mile open ocean race through the Kaiwi Channel that ends at Duke Kahanamoku Beach in Waikiki, O'ahu.
4. The highest point on the island is recorded at 4,970 feet on the volcano called East Moloka'i. What is the name of this point?

Answer: Kamakou

Much of the north part of East Moloka'i is rain forest containing many native plants and insects. The Nature Conservancy's Kamakou and Pelekunu Valley preserves help to maintain the rain forest.
5. There are a few channels (passages or waterways) which separate all the islands. One of the less treacherous, the Kalohi Channel separates Moloka'i and another island. What is the name of the other island?

Answer: Lana'i

There are nine channels which separate all the islands. The Alenuihaha Channel separates the Big Island and Maui. The Alalakeiki Channel separates Kaho'olawe and Maui. The Kealaikahiki Channel is the channel between Lānaʻi and Kahoʻolawe. The Au'au Channel separates Lana'i and Maui.

The Pailolo Channel separates Maui and Moloka'i. The Kaulakahi Channel separates Kaua'i and Ni'ihau and the Ka'ie'iewaho Channel separates O'ahu and Kaua'i. The other two channels were previously mentioned.
6. In November/December 2007, Moloka'i was ranked 6th among 111 island destinations of the world by a certain "national" magazine. The rankings are determined by a panel of 522 experts of a tourism and destination organization. What is the name of the magazine which consults these experts?

Answer: National Geographic Traveler

The National Geographic Traveler magazine and National Geographic Center for Sustainable Destinations conduct annual Destination Scorecard surveys, aided by George Washington University. The panel of experts review conditions on 111 selected human-inhabited islands around the world.
7. Moloka'i has the highest sea cliffs in the world. These sea cliffs are the result of the northern half of the East Moloka'i volcano collapsing about 1.5 million years ago.

Answer: True

These sea cliffs located along the north shore of the island rise about 1,010 meters (around 3,000 feet) above the Pacific Ocean. You can see the sea cliffs as backdrops in movies like "Jurassic Park III" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End".
8. Within the United States, Moloka'i has the longest fringing reef. On what shoreline is this reef located?

Answer: south

A fringing reef is a coral reef located in the tropics and are generally near the shoreline. This particular reef on the south shore of Moloka'i is 40 kilometers long.
9. The western half of the island is dry and the soil is bare. There isn't much grass or ground cover and most of the west end is covered in what non-native tree?

Answer: Kiawe

Kiawe or prosopis pallida is a species of mesquite tree. Kiawe was introduced into Hawaii in 1828. Today it is a ubiquitous shade tree and invasive weed on the Hawaiian Islands, providing firewood for heating and grilling.
10. On the northwestern shore of the island is one of the last intact dune ecosystems in Hawaii. What is the name of this remaining ecosystem?

Answer: Mo'omomi Preserve

Mo'omomi is a Nature Conservancy Preserve. The Mo'omomi preserve contains sand dunes, lithified sand formations, rare endemic Hawaiian coastal plant species, nesting seabirds and green sea turtles, and the occasional Hawaiian monk seal.
