Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these locations has never boasted a palace?

Answer: Queensbury

Despite its name, Queensbury (near Harrow) has no royal connection. Nonsuch Palace at Cheam, near Sutton, and Richmond Palace were royal palaces. Eltham Palace, a royal residence from 1311, is now an unique blend of medieval hall and art deco mansion.
2. Between which places did the world's first public railway run?

Answer: Croydon and Wandsworth

Opened in 1803, the Surrey Iron Railway was hauled by horses and did not carry passengers, but unlike earlier railways, it carried goods for any member of the public.
3. What is the present day name of the former Roman city of Verulamium?

Answer: St Albans

Verulamium, now in Hertfordshire, was the third largest city in Roman Britain.
4. Which infamous club met at Medmenham Abbey, near West Wycombe, in Buckinghamshire?

Answer: Hellfire Club

The Hellfire club were lambasted in the late eighteenth century for their erotic debauchery and mock religious ceremonies. Members included William Hogarth, the Prince of Wales, and the son of an Archbishop of Canterbury.
5. Which Hertfordshire town was the first attempt to build a garden city?

Answer: Letchworth

Raymond Unwin and Barry Parker put many of Ebenezer Howard's ideas on (anti-)city planning into practice at Letchworth from 1903, and only later at Welwyn and Hampstead. The project was only a partial success, but paved the way for the post-WWII new towns.
6. Where is the longest pleasure pier in the world?

Answer: Southend-on-Sea

Southend Pier is one-and-a-third miles long, and has a train to save you the walk to the end.
7. Where is Pocahontas buried?

Answer: Gravesend, Kent

Pocahontas died, probably of pneumonia, in 1617 while preparing to return home. Attempts to bring her body back to America have failed as the exact location of her grave is unknown.
8. Which of these British monarchs was crowned at Kingston-upon-Thames, in South London?

Answer: Alfred the Great

Edward the Elder, Athelstan, Edmund I, Edwy and Edward the Martyr were also crowned at Kingston in the ninth and tenth centuries. The King's Stone where they were crowned is still in the town.
9. What famous structure was re-erected near Sydenham in South London, in 1852?

Answer: Crystal Palace

Once the Great Exhibition of 1851 was over, the Crystal Palace was re-erected and enlarged in a suburban area which now bears its name. London Bridge was re-erected in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, in the 1960s. Shakespeare's Globe Theatre was recently rebuilt near its original site in Southwark.
10. And finally, in which county does Runnymede, site of the signing of the Magna Carta, now lie?

Answer: Surrey

The site where this historic document was signed by King John in 1215 lies near Egham, in Surrey.
