County Offaly is the 18th largest of all the counties on the island of Ireland. The county takes its name from the old Kingdom of Uí Failghe. The county is mainly made up of the Slieve Bloom Mountains, the Bog of Allen, the Boora bog and the floodplains of the River Shannon. It has borders with the following counties Roscommon, Tipperary, Kildare, Meath, Westmeath, Laois and Galway.

The Grand Canal flows into the Shannon River near the town of Clonony, the town is home to Coonony Castle, a Tudor castle said to be haunted by the ghost of a man seen at the tower wearing old-fashioned clothes. Clonony is situated near the Grand Canal, one of two canals connecting the River Shannon with Dublin, the other canal is the Royal Canal.
