Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The tallest mountain in Europe is Mount Elbrus. Which large country is it located in?

Answer: Russia

Mount Elbrus is located in the European section of Russia. Its highest peak was first climbed in 1874, making it the first of the seven continents' highest peaks to be climbed.

Mount Elbrus is considered an inactive volcano. It has been known since ancient times and is believed to be the mountain that Prometheus was tied to in Greek mythology after he gave fire to man.
2. Mont Blanc is a well-known mountain that also happens to contain the highest point in France and which other country?

Answer: Italy

Mont Blanc is the highest mountain in the Alps and the highest in Western Europe. The peak is in France near enough to the Italian border that no other mountain in Italy is higher. It is actually in three countries: France, Italy, and Switzerland. However, the peak is far enough away from the Swiss border that it is not the tallest mountain in that country.

Mont Blanc was first ascended in 1786, three years before the French Revolution, making it one of the first high mountains to be conquered.

Chamonix, site of the first Winter Olympics in 1924, is located on Mont Blanc.
3. Our next mountain is called Monte Rosa in Italian and German and Mont Rose in French. Which country claims this as its highest peak?

Answer: Switzerland

Switzerland has four official languages that it shares with other countries: French, German, and Italian. Thus its highest peak has names in all three languages. It is the second highest peak in the Alps.

There is one more official language in Switzerland, Romansh, which is used primarily just within parts of Switzerland.
4. Mount Bazarduzu is located on the border of Russia and another former Soviet Republic. In what predominantly Muslim country is it the highest point?

Answer: Azerbaijan

Mount Bazarduzu is very near the southernmost point in Russia. It is in the Caucasus Mountains.

Azerbaijan was in the southwest corner of the Soviet Union. It has historically been more westernized than many Muslim countries, including allowing women to vote in 1918. However, there has also been a historical animosity with its Christian neighbor Armenia.
5. Grossglockner is the name of the highest peak of which country that hosted the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976?

Answer: Austria

Grossglockner is the highest peak in the eastern Alps. There is a road connecting it with the city of Salzburg, thus making it easier to access than many mountains and allowing more tourists to visit.

The 1964 and 1976 Olympics were both held in Innsbruck, which is towards the western end of Austria, about 80 kilometers west of Grossglockner.
6. Coma Pedrosa is the highest peak in which landlocked mountainous country?

Answer: Andorra

Located in the Pyrenees Mountains, Andorra has an average elevation of almost 2,000 meters making it the country with the second highest elevation in the world after Kyrgyzstan. Despite being less than 500 square kilometers in area, there are 65 mountain peaks within Andorra.
7. The highest point in Greece is known from ancient times for the twelve residents believed to have lived there. What is it known as?

Answer: Mount Olympus

Mount Olympus was considered the home of the Greek gods, including Zeus, Poseidon, Ares, and Athena. It is located in the northern part of Greece near the Aegean Sea. The ancient Olympic games were held in tribute to the gods on Mount Olympus.
8. The summit of Mount Korab forms the border of which two neighbors of Greece, and is also the highest peak in both?

Answer: Albania and Macedonia

In addition to forming the border between Albania and Macedonia, Mount Korab lies about ten miles from the border these two countries share with Kosovo. Mount Korab is at the southwestern end of the Sar Mountains, which extend about 75 kilometers along the Kosovo-Macedonia border.
9. Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the United Kingdom. In which highland country is it located?

Answer: Scotland

Ben Nevis is located in west central Scotland. Scotland is home to the top fifty peaks in the United Kingdom, and all but five of those have a height of over 1000 meters (with those five all in Wales). Ben Nevis is over 250 meters higher than Snowdon, the highest peak in Wales.
10. Not every European country has a high mountain. Which country's highest point, Chemin des Revoires, is only about 160 meters above sea level, not surprising considering the size and location of the county?

Answer: Monaco

Actually, it's somewhat surprising that the highest point in Monaco isn't lower considering the country is only two square miles in area and almost half of its border is at sea level with the Mediterranean. Chemin des Revoires is a path on the slope of Mont Agel, a mountain that peaks at over 1,100 meters in France. It is located toward the western border of Monaco.
