Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The HMS Duddon, H-37 Garnier Sampaio, and HrMs Johan Maurits van Nassau have all used the name of this river upon which Humphrey Bogart's famous film steamboat, the "African Queen", was also built and launched. What river is this?

Answer: Ribble

The first HMS Ribble was built in the North East in 1904. The second was borrowed by the Dutch in World War Two and renamed HrMs Johan Maurits van Nassau. The third was launched as HMS Duddon but was given to Canada in 1944 and renamed HMCS Ribble. The last one was sold to Brazil in 1995 and recommissioned as H-37 Garnier Sampaio.

The "African Queen" was built by Lytham Shipbuilding and Engineering Limited in 1912. It is currently berthed in Key Largo, Florida, but is not in good shape despite being placed on the US Register of Historic Places in 1992. Phoenix Rising member mikew41 created this question.
2. What is the name of the river in Malacca, Malaysia, that was once an important trade route during the 1400s?

Answer: Malacca

The Malacca River was the founding place of the Malacca Sultanate. Trading was done along a bridge, now known as the Tan Boon Seng Bridge, where one could barter for goods from the East and the West. The capture of this bridge by the Portuguese led to the downfall of the Malacca Sultanate. Phoenix Rising member purelyqing created this question.
3. The highest waterfall in the world can be found in Venezuela. What river does it flow into?

Answer: Kerep

Angel Falls is the highest waterfall in the world at 979 meters. The length of the drop combined with strong winds causes the water from the falls to vaporize into a mist before it reaches the bottom. The Kerep River is formed at the base of the falls and flows into the Churun River, which in turn flows into the Carrao River. Phoenix Rising member tazman6619 created this question.
4. What river starts in Stockport, Greater Manchester, and has been featured in songs by Gerry & The Pacemakers and the Stone Roses?

Answer: Mersey

Even though the Mersey is associated with the city of Liverpool, it actually starts in the town of Stockport, Greater Manchester. "Mersey Paradise" was a song by the Stone Roses, and "Ferry Cross the Mersey" was a song by Gerry & The Pacemakers. The Tame and Goyt rivers form together to start the Mersey, and the Bollin is a tributary of the Mersey. Phoenix Rising member zonko created this question.
5. This is the longest river in Sabah, Malaysia. It is famed for its fascinating wildlife. What is the name of this river?

Answer: Kinabatangan

Kinabatangan can be visited all year round. The lower Kinabatangan is an excellent spot for viewing wildlife, and a part of it has been designated as a bird sanctuary. Phoenix Rising member purelyqing created this question.
6. What river, which flows close to a Southwestern Australian town of the same name, is surrounded by an area that thrives on tourism and is proud to be the producer of award-winning table wine?

Answer: Margaret River

Margaret River was founded circa 1831. Interestingly, Margaret River is noted as a 'premium' wine region (produces 3% of Australia's wine but 40% of Australia's premium wine) and a boundary has been established. If your property falls outside that boundary, you are forbidden to use the words 'Margaret River' in your labelling.

Murray River in South West Australia was discovered in 1829. History tells us that in 1834, the Battle of Pinjarra occurred where up to 40 Noongar Aboriginal people were killed by white settlers.

7. A dam on this river of the same name failed on June 5, 1976. The resulting flood took the lives of 11 people and caused an estimated $2 billion in damages. Can you name the river and dam?

Answer: Teton

The Teton Dam was an earthen dam on the Teton River in Southeastern Idaho. As the spring run-off began to fill the dam for the first time, leaks appeared. The first leak appeared at 7:30 in the morning of June 5, 1976; at 11:15 that morning, towns downstream were warned to evacuate and at 11:55 a.m., the dam began to collapse. It took less than two minutes for the dam to completely wash out.

By 8:00 p.m. the dam reservoir was empty. Thousands of farms, homes, and businesses in the towns immediately downstream were destroyed, and tens of thousands of acres of top soil were washed away. The flood waters were eventually stopped 80 miles downstream at the American Falls dam.

8. This river divides Cleveland into an east side and a west side and empties into Lake Erie. This river was originally named by the Native Americans and means "crooked river" in the Iroquois language. What is the name of this river?

Answer: Cuyahoga River

The Cuyahoga River was once so polluted that it caught fire several times between the 1930s and the late 1960s. The publicity from the 1969 fire helped spur a series of water pollution control activities resulting in the Clean Water Act, the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, and the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency. Phoenix Rising member chiroman created this question.
9. Which river in south-eastern Australia starts at Mount Kosciuszko and is the source of fuel for several hydro-electric power stations?

Answer: Snowy River

The diversion of waters to fuel the power stations created a wealth of jobs in construction and agriculture for Australians during the 1950s. However it also presented the government with a major environmental issue in the 1990s. The river is the setting for one of Australia's iconic pieces of poetry, 'The Man from Snowy River', by Banjo Patterson. Phoenix Rising Member pollucci19 created this question.
10. This river in Singapore was a centre for trade and commerce. Its mouth was once known as the Port of Singapore. What is the name of this river?
