Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I'm sailing along the coast of Africa. I've just passed Alexandria and soon I will pass the Nile Delta. My heading changes south. Where am I?

Answer: The Suez Canal

On November 17,1869 the Suez Canal was opened for navigation. It links two oceans and two seas the Atlantic and Mediterranean via Gibraltar to Port Said, and the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea via Bab Al Mandab and the Gulf of Suez to the port of Suez. It is the longest Canal that has no locks and can be widened and deepened at any time whenever necessary.
2. After navigating the Red Sea and entering the Indian Ocean, I sail due south down the east coast of Africa passing Kenya and Tanzania and enter the Mozambique Channel. Which country sits alone to my left?

Answer: Madagascar

Formerly an independent kingdom, Madagascar became a French colony in 1886, but regained its independence in 1960. During 1992-93, free presidential and National Assembly elections were held, ending 17 years of single-party rule. In 1997 in the second presidential race, Didier Ratsiraka, the leader during the 1970s and 1980s, was returned to the presidency.
3. Heading west past the Cape Of Good Hope, I sail South West on the South Atlantic. I'm going to moor for a few weeks and try some mountain climbing on Mt Vinson Massif while I'm here. Where am I?

Answer: Antarctica

2500 kms from the nearest civilisation, Mount Vinson stands isolated in a frozen landscape. It is Antarctica's highest mountain with a summit unlike any other in the world. For as far as the eye can see, thousands of square kilometers of ice caps and glaciers fade into a distinctly curved horizon. Mt Vinson at 4897m is 1200km from the South Pole and is the highest of these.
4. North along the west coast of South America to Lima, Peru and then a scary flight into Cuzco, high in the Andes. What am I likely to be doing in Cuzco?

Answer: Visiting the Inca ruins

The best remaining Inca ruins are found in Machu Picchu, an amazing Inca citadel located at 120 km of Cuzco and one of the greatest marvels created by man. Cuzco was literally made of gold before the Spanish said "Thanks very much" and took it for themselves.
5. At sea level again, heading north along the South American coast. The GPS has just informed me I'm at 0 degrees latitude. What country is to my immediate right?

Answer: Ecuador

The "Republic of the Equator" was one of three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others being Colombia and Venezuela). Between 1904 and 1942, Ecuador lost territories in a series of conflicts with its neighbors.
6. Heading west south of the equator to visit the Great Barrier Reef in Australia I pass thousands of South Pacific Islands. Which of these island groups DIDN'T I sail through?

Answer: Hawaiian Islands

The Hawaiian Islands are in the North Pacific. The Pacific Ocean is the largest of the world's five oceans. The decision by the International Hydrographic Organization in the spring of 2000 to delimit a fifth ocean, the Southern Ocean, removed the portion of the Pacific Ocean south of 60 degrees south.
7. I'm off to Japan to fix my sushi craving, I anchor down in a very large bay. GPS tells me the cities of Kawasaki and Yokohama are close by. Where am I?

Answer: Tokyo Bay

On the second September 1945 Tokyo Bay became part of history. It was the location for the formal surrender of the Empire of Japan on Board USS Missouri. (Tokyo is at the north end of the bay.)
8. I'm at a location where the Russian and North American mainlands almost touch! Where am I?

Answer: Bering Strait

The western tip of Alaska and the eastern tip of Russia (Chukchi Peninsula) practically meet. They are less than 70 miles apart. The Bering Strait cuts through both land masses separating the continents.
9. After a long sail across the top of the world I turn south along the Norwegian coast and into the North Sea. I'm looking for a river to take me all the way to London.

Answer: Thames

200 miles of river, four world heritage sites, Windsor castle, Tower of London, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and Hampton Court are just a few sights along the mighty Thames.
10. We have nearly completed our world trip. To leave the Atlantic Ocean we just need to sail 'through the gates' and we're back in the Mediterranean for a nice rest in the Greek Islands. What gates am I talking about?

Answer: Strait of Gibraltar

The strait's narrow doorway to the Mediterranean has been the vicinity of many historic naval battles, with Lord Nelson's victory at Trafalgar (Western tip of Gibraltar) perhaps the most famous. During WWII the Allies patrolled this area heavily to prevent German U-Boats entering the Mediterranean.
