Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which town, on the Fylde Coast in Lancashire, was the original home of ERNIE, the machine used to draw winning Premium Bond numbers?

Answer: St Annes on Sea

ERNIE, standing for Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment, was first used in 1957. A newer version, ERNIE 4, is more than 400 times faster than the original, and takes only two and a half hours to select over 1.6 million winning numbers in each monthly draw.
2. What is the name of the largest market town in Cambridgeshire, which sits astride the River Great Ouse? It was the home of John Bellingham, the first man ever to have assassinated a British Prime Minister, as well as the home of the world's first surviving quadruplets.

Answer: St Neots

St Neots gets its name from the Cornish saint St Neot, whose bones were hidden in the priory at St Neots. The remains of the priory now lie hidden under a supermarket car park.
3. Which Scottish town is known as the home of golf?

Answer: St Andrews

As well as being the home of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, founded in 1754, St Andrews boasts the third oldest university in the English-speaking world (after Oxford and Cambridge). It was established by Papal Bull in 1410.
4. There are several places with this name in Britain, but the largest is an industrial town on Merseyside. It is famous for glassmaking and for its Rugby League team, who during the '90s and '00s won the premiership six times and were runners-up five times. Name it.

Answer: St Helens

Most of the large industries from which St Helens originally prospered have closed down or moved abroad, leaving Pilkington Glass as one of the largest employers. St Helens was also the site of the first fully man-made canal, which opened in 1757.
5. Which coastal town is capital of Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands? Although they are a British Crown Dependency, the islands are much closer to the coast of France (12 miles) than they are to Great Britain (87 miles).

Answer: St Helier

St Helier is home to about one third of the inhabitants of Jersey. Liberation Square, in the town centre, has a large statue depicting locals raising the British flag after the departure of the Nazi occupation forces in 1945.
6. Just north of London, which ancient city, once called Verulamium by the Romans, has been occupied for over 2000 years? It is the largest town in Hertfordshire. It saw much conflict in its early years, being destroyed by Boudica during her revolt against the Romans, and being the site of two battles during the Wars of the Roses.

Answer: St Albans

St Albans grew originally because of its location. In later years, it grew dramatically larger as a dormitory town with many new homes being built for London commuters.
7. Which suburb of northwest London is internationally famous for being the home of Lord's Cricket Ground and of Abbey Road recording studio?

Answer: St John's Wood

Marylebone Cricket Club has its home at Lord's. It was founded in 1787 and was the governing body of world cricket until 1993 when the International Cricket Council took over the role.
8. There's one in Cornwall and one in Cambridgeshire--and on the way to one of them I met a man with lots of wives, sacks, cats and kittens. What's the name of the town?

Answer: St Ives

"As I was going to St Ives I met a man with seven wives ..." is an ancient English nursery rhyme in the form of a riddle. No one is really sure which St Ives is the subject of the rhyme.
9. What is the smallest city in the United Kingdom and has a cathedral dedicated to the patron saint of Wales?

Answer: St David's

St David's is a city by virtue of its cathedral rather than its size, as its population equates only to that of a medium-sized village. It is the only city in Great Britain to be entirely within a National Park. It had been given city status back in the 1500s but lost it in the 1800s. Queen Elizabeth II asked for St David's to regain its city status in 1994 and it was duly restored.
10. This small town, near to Land's End, is the most westerly town in mainland Great Britain, and was for many years at the heart of the tin mining industry. Which one is it?

Answer: St Just

There are two towns called St Just within a few miles of each other in Cornwall. To differentiate between the two, one is known as St Just in Penwith, whereas the other is known as St Just in Roseland. Just outside the town is Cape Cornwall, the only cape in England.
