Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton reportedly said "Baden-Baden is so nice, that you have to name it twice." In what country could you soak in the spas of Baden-Baden?

Answer: Germany

Baden means "to bathe" in German. Famous people who travelled to Baden-Baden to use the hot springs in the 19th century included Queen Victoria of Britain, Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany, and Napoleon III.
2. Dum-Dum bullets, which expand on impact, were developed by Captain Bertie Clay of the British Royal Artillery while he was stationed at the Dum Dum Arsenal in the 1890s. Where is the Dum Dum Arsenal located?

Answer: India

Dum Dum is located near Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) and is the site of the local airport. British troops served regularly in India for most of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th, until Indian independence in 1947.
3. According to the city's official website, Wagga Wagga means "place of many crows" in the Wiradjuri Aboriginal language. Where would you find Wagga Wagga?

Answer: New South Wales, Australia

Some alternative meanings of Wagga Wagga are listed at http://www.waggawaggaaustralia.com.au/area_name.asp. Most of them are related to dancing.

Australia has over 250 double-barrelled place names.
4. The city of Walla Walla (not to be confused with Wagga Wagga) began as a trading post for fur traders in the early 1800s and expanded in the 1860s as a result of the gold rush. Where can you visit the Fort Walla Walla Museum or watch the annual Balloon Stampede?

Answer: Washington State, USA

The Walla Walla area was originally inhabited by the Native American tribe of the same name. Walla Walla means "many waters" in their language. The Corps of Discovery expedition, led by Lewis and Clark, met the Walla Walla people in 1805.
5. Pago Pago names a small town and the harbor area nearby. One of its major industries is tuna canning. Where would you go to see the Rainmaker Mountain from Pago Pago Harbor?

Answer: American Samoa

The Starkist tuna cannery in Atu'u, Pago Pago sports a statue of Charlie the Tuna, the company mascot who appeared in many television commercials. He was a fish who was always trying to demonstrate his good taste, only to be told that Starkist wanted tuna that tasted good.
Pago Pago is pronounced Pango Pango.
6. The city of Xai-Xai was formerly known as Joao Belo and is located on the Limpopo River. Where would you go to relax on the sands of the Xai-Xai beach (approximately 12 km from the city), also known by its Portuguese name, Praia do Xai-Xai?

I haven't been able to find the origin of the name "Xai-Xai". If anyone knows what it means or what language it comes from, please contact me and I'll add the information here.
7. The island of Bora Bora served as a United States military supply base during World War II, and today receives most of its income from tourism. Where is Bora Bora located?

Puka Puka is another island in French Polynesia with a double-barrelled name.
8. "Bella, Bella" means "Beautiful, beautiful" in Italian, but Bella Bella is also the name of a village on Campbell island, inhabited by the Heiltsuk First Nations people. If you flew into the Bella Bella Airport, where would you be?

Answer: British Columbia, Canada

Campbell Island is located north of Vancouver Island on the west coast of Canada. There is also a Campbell Island as part of New Zealand, but it does not include a village named Bella Bella.

The term "First Nations" is used in Canada to refer to the peoples who lived in the area before the arrival of Europeans. The term "Native Americans" is used similarly in the United States.
9. The town of Ossining, home of the Sing Sing Correctional Facility, is located on the Hudson River and was formerly called Sing Sing. In 1901 the town changed its name in order to avoid confusion with the prison name. In which of the United States can you visit the Sing Sing Prison Museum?

Answer: New York

Ossining is located less than an hour north of New York City. The prison is still in active use (as of 2009). The museum is located in a Community Center, not attached to the prison facilities.

According to an article about the prison on TruTv.com, the name Sing Sing is based on Native American words 'Sint Sinks' for 'stone upon stone'. (Wikipedia spells this 'Sincks Sincks' but gives the same meaning.) The town name preceded the prison which was built in 1825.
10. The lush green farmland around Matamata inspired Peter Jackson to use it as a setting in the "Lord of the Rings" movies. If you travelled to Matamata to see hobbit holes and eat lunch at The Shire's Rest cafe, where would you be?

Answer: New Zealand

Due to the popularity of the films, portions of the Hobbiton movie set have remained available for tourists, including 17 hobbit holes. Several companies offer guided "Lord of the Rings" tours in different parts of New Zealand.
