Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This small town has a large replica of a television space ship in the middle of town.

Answer: Vulcan

The connection with "Star Trek" is merely a coincidence, but after the show began, the town of Vulcan built a huge Starship Enterprise just off the main highway. Vulcan was named after the Roman god of fire.
2. This town less than 30 minutes south of Calgary got its name from the Blackfoot word that describes the glacial deposit just outside of town.

Answer: Okotoks

Okotoks is a rapidly growing community and the shopping hub for small towns throughout the foothills. In 2009 it had a population of 20000 - about four times the population 15 years earlier!
3. This town is home to the oldest Latter Day Saints temple built outside of the United States.

Answer: Cardston

Cardston was founded by Charles Ora Card and has a substantial LDS population. It is known for having the first Mormon temple built outside of the United States. This temple was opened in 1923.
4. This small Southern Alberta town contains Oilfields High School, home of the Drillers.

Answer: Black Diamond

Black Diamond also happens to have a large wooden replica of a black diamond outside of the town office. The local high school sports teams have one of the most unique names in the region... the Oilfields Drillers.
5. This is the largest city in Alberta located south of Calgary.

Answer: Lethbridge

Lethbridge is famous for its wind, which regularly reaches speeds of more than 100 kmh. The University of Lethbridge has one of the most interesting campuses in Alberta, as it is built into the side of a large cliff.
6. This small town is home to country music singer Ian Tyson and is located along Highway 22.

Answer: Longview

Longview is a small ranching community near Kananaskis provincial park. If you are driving south from Calgary to Crowsnest Pass, be sure to stop here for gas... you won't get another chance for an hour and a half! It is also home to Longview Beef Jerky.
7. This small town is so windy that the trees mostly grow on an angle. It is located a short distance from Waterton and Lethbridge and has a substantial First Nations population.

Answer: Pincher Creek

The town received its name when a group of prospectors lost a pincer in a nearby creek (seriously). Popular local belief states that Pincher Creek was named on "Jeopardy" as being the windiest place in North America. These rumors are unsubstantiated and appear to also be untrue, but Pincher Creek is very windy, regardless.
8. This town is located within a park that is home to the famed Prince of Wales hotel.

Answer: Waterton

Waterton also has many beautiful lakes and hikes that vary substantially in degree of difficulty. Waterton Lake itself is a dead lake, as it is too cold to sustain life. Waterton connects to Glacier National Park in the United States.
9. This small town has a flood nearly every year. It is home to Highwood High School and is home to the Mustangs.

Answer: High River

High River is another fast-growing community that is within commuting distance to Calgary. It is known throughout the region for the regularity with which it floods. Bring your clubs because High River has an outstanding 27 hole championship public golf course.
10. This tiny village contains the first school in Southern Alberta that is powered in part by a large wind turbine located on the school's front lawn.

Answer: Cayley

This small hamlet south of High River was once a boom-town, but receded heavily when the stockyards left. By the early 21st century there were only about 300 people living in town.
