Answer: Nebraska

Nebraska also has a number of other counties named after famous Americans. Webster County is named after Daniel Webster. Sherman County was named for Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman. Greeley County got its name for Horace Greeley. Franklin County is named after Benjamin Franklin. Finally, Hamilton County was named for Alexander Hamilton.

Answer: Alaska

The other state not to have divisions called "counties" is Louisiana. There, the divisions are known as parishes, with names like Bienville, Lafayette, and Orleans.

All of the listed counties are named after men that were neither from nor represented the state of Alabama. James Barbour was a Governor of Virginia. Willie Blount was a Governor of Tennessee. John Clarke was a General from Georgia. Zebulon Pike was an explorer from New Jersey. Lastly, Isaac Shelby was a Governor of Kentucky.

Answer: Maryland

Cecil Calvert helped to found the state of Maryland. Cecil is the Anglicized form of Cecilius Calvert's first name, while 'Baltimore' was his royal title. Anne Arundel was the wife of Cecilius Calvert, and Worcester was her sister's name. Somerset was the sister-in-law of Cecilius Calvert. Charles was the son of Cecilius Calvert. Caroline was the daughter of Charles Calvert. Frederick was the last Baron Baltimore.
5. Which state has only three counties: New Castle, Kent, and Sussex?

Answer: Delaware

Despite being the smallest state in area, Rhode Island actually has more counties than Delaware. As opposed to Delaware's three, Rhode Island actually has five.

Delaware is second smallest in area, but has the fewest counties, whereas Rhode Island is smallest in area, but has the second fewest counties.
6. Which western state has many of its counties named after Native Americans or tribes, like Apache, Cochise, Coconino, Maricopa, Mohave, Pima, Yavapai, and Yuma?

Answer: Arizona

Arizona also has a few counties named after geographical locales. Gila County is named after the Gila River, Graham County after Mount Graham, Pinal County after the Pinal Mountains, and Santa Cruz County after the Santa Cruz River.

Answer: Massachusetts

Another Massachusetts county of interest is Dukes County. This county name refers to the fact that, while it was still a part of New York, it was literally under the possession of the Duke of York. Martha's Vineyard is a part of Dukes County, MA.
8. Which state has a number of counties that are also Spanish words, like Alameda, Madera, Mariposa, Nevada, and Sierra?

Answer: California

Alameda means "a cottonwood grove". Madera means "wood". Mariposa means "butterfly". Nevada means "snowfall". Sierra means "mountain range".

Answer: Pennsylvania

Answer: Texas

Texas is the second biggest U.S. state by size, following Alaska. It is known as the Lone Star State.
