Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Commonwealth of Virginia borders the largest estuary in the U.S. Which body of water is this?

Answer: Chesapeake Bay

More than 150 rivers and streams drain into the Chesapeake Bay, draining parts of the states of Virginia and Maryland (that directly border the Bay), as well as Delaware, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York. The Bay is over 200 miles long and covers an area of almost 4,500 square miles, but the average depth is only 21 feet.

2. Like many countries, Canada has some towns and villages with very odd names. In the province of Newfoundland which of these communities has a rather raunchy name?

Answer: Dildo

Changed from being spelt Dildoe in the 18th century for reasons unknown, strong and frequent requests to change the name have always been resisted by the residents. Newfoundland seems to have a thing for strange names. You''ll also find Hearts Content and Come By Chance on the island.

Climax is a village in Saskatchewan, population around 190. Ecu Secum, which is not a Latin but a Micmac name meaning Red House, is in Nova Scotia and St-Louis-de-Ha!Ha! is located in Quebec, certainly the only place in Canada with two exclamation marks in its name.

3. Usual Suspect KatMcg's current state of residence is home to a famous bridge, beaches, mountains, the tallest trees and an iconic sign. This U.S. state also boasts numerous National Parks, including one considered the "crown jewel" of America's national park system. Name the 1,200-square mile park that sees millions of visitors each year all along its mountainous scenery that includes ancient giant sequoias, immense cliffs, deep valleys and towering waterfalls surrounded by a mighty wilderness.

Answer: Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park was first protected in 1864 and well known for its waterfalls, but offers visitors so much more, including abundant wildlife and stunning glacier-sculpted geology. Yosemite is best explored on foot over several days. Besides its natural beauty, it also offers world-class recreational opportunities. This beautiful park is nestled in The Golden State -- California.

When you think of California, you might think of Hollywood and all the glitz and glamor the entertainment industry entails. If you're a wine lover, you might also be well aware of California's spectacular wine country, especially Napa Valley. And, of course, most people know about the stunning beaches scattered all along the California coastline. What many people may not have discovered is the immense diversity of California's terrain, which includes ancient forests, breathtaking mountains, desert landscapes, cliff-lined beaches, fertile farmland and more. It's also a mecca of historic trails, national monuments, historic sites and national parks like Yosemite. Come visit, you won't be disappointed!

4. Home to Marshall Space Flight Center and Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, AL is known as "The Rocket City". However, this nickname has only been in place since the 1950s. Before then, the Huntsville area held another title. What was it?

Watercress was a large commodity in the early 20th century, and watercress production was centered in and around Huntsville. 5. What is the name of the ice age land formation in northwest Iowa consisting of more than 640,000 acres of windblown silt, clay and fine sand?

Answer: The Loess Hills

The Loess Hills of Iowa are a unique geologic feature of windblown soils, some ground as fine as flour, formed by glacial deposits dating back to the last ice age. The Loess Hills were formed over a period of ten to 20,000 years. Today, visitors will find steep bluffs, old forest timber and native prairie grass throughout this scenic mid-west destination.

6. Which notable geographic feature of the state of Missouri marks the general southern limit of prehistoric glaciation?

Answer: Missouri River

Northern Missouri is rather flat and most streams flow north-to-south, both evidence that the land was scoured by massive ice sheets. "Erratics" - rocks from the size of a fist to larger than an elephant - are often found here, hundreds of miles south of where they were formed, having been transported by the glaciers. The Missouri River flows west-to-east and is lined with many loess hills, fine, loose material that was pushed ahead of the ice. South of the Missouri River, the land rises to the Ozark Mountains that were never glaciated.

9. What city was the State capital when the University of Alabama opened in Tuscaloosa in 1831?

Answer: Tuscaloosa

Alabama was a frontier state in 1831. Wealthy parents sent their children to the UA, while most of the backwoods children didn't want to go. Discipline was difficult. One incident in 1834, the rebellious students threw brickbats at the President and chased him off. Shortly after that, the UA became a military institution. In 1865 Croxton's raiders destroyed the UA, including the beautiful Rotunda (Greek style library). The only buildings left were a small stone building used by night watchmen; the Gorgas House where food was served; and the beautiful President's Mansion. Legend has it that while the "Yankees" tried to set fire to it, the President's wife came out with a broom and shamed them into leaving. The mansion is still there and still beautiful.

10. Which person who was a prominent figure during the American Civil War moved to Montreal, Canada after the end of the conflict?

Answer: Jefferson Davis

After two years in a military prison, the former president of the Confederacy went north to join his exiled family in Montreal and spent some time there and in Lennoxille in eastern Quebec where his son was attending school. A brass marker installed on a downtown building was unveiled in 1958 attesting to this. The plaque was stolen some years later and a replacement was commissioned by the Daughters of the Confederacy.
