Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Legendary city in Mali, World Heritage site

Answer: Timbuktu

On the southern border of the Sahara Desert, Timbuktu has been settled continuously since the 1300s. It was originally established along a major trade route and flourished through the end of the 16th century. Today, Timbuktu has several mosques and cemeteries that were awarded World Heritage status, but the city in the 21st century has fallen victim to terrorist groups who have threatened the destruction of many of the city's most venerated historic features and buildings.
2. Indiana city whose named translates to "highland".

Answer: Terre Haute

Terre Haute is in the American state of Indiana, near the Illinois border. Its meaning, "highland", refers to its position high above the Wabash River. Interestingly, at the time of its settlement by the French in the 18th century, the area was considered to be the border between Canada and Louisiana!-because of the recently-purchased Louisiana Territory.

The city has produced a number of notables, including Larry Bird, Eugene Debs, and Scatman Crothers.
3. African city located on the Mediterranean Sea, paired in song with the halls of Montezuma.

Answer: Tripoli

Tripoli is the capital of Libya. In ancient times it was one of three towns in the area, hence its name. It is featured in the "Marines' Hymn", the first verse of which goes:
"From the Halls of Montezuma
To the shores of Tripoli
We fight our country's battles
In the air, on land and sea.
First to fight for right and freedom
And to keep our honor clean;
We are proud to claim the title
Of United States Marine."
4. Large Asian city situated on an estuary, or "edo".

Answer: Tokyo

Tokyo Bay is an estuary, where the waters of several rivers, including the Sumida and Arakawa Rivers, meet the Pacific. The word "edo" in Japanese carries the meaning "estuary".
5. Central American capital city located several thousand feet above sea level.

Answer: Tegucigalpa

Located in the mountainous central part of Honduras, Tegucigalpa's climate is warm, but moderated somewhat by its altitude. The city is known locally as "Tegus"; it has been settled by Europeans since the 1500s. Interestingly, when Tegucigalpa was first designated as the capital city in 1824, another major city, Comayagua, was also awarded capital status.

The two cities were to alternate as the capital. This arrangement continued until 1880, when Tegucigalpa was made the sole capital of Honduras.
6. City located on the west shores of the Gulf of Mexico in the state of Tamaulipas, known for its oil industry.

Answer: Tampico

Tampico has been the site of serious criminal activity in the 21st century, and the US government has posted travel alerts in 2015 and 2016 recommending no unnecessary travel to the state of Tamaulipas. Violence of various types has become so prevalent in Tampico that its citizens have protested the Mexican government's failure to ensure their (and visitors') safety.
7. Large inland city in Queensland, with an aboriginal name.

Answer: Toowoomba

Toowoomba, which roughly translates as "the swamp", was first settled by Europeans in the mid-1800s. A portion of the land upon which it's located actually was a swamp, which was drained before the city was built. The city is in southeastern Queensland, about 75 miles from Brisbane.
8. Italian city located on the Po River.

Answer: Turin

Turin is probably most famous for the Shroud of Turin, which bears the image of a man widely reputed to be Jesus Christ. Although the shroud's authenticity has been questioned (and by carbon dating, it has been identified as originating in the Middle Ages) it is nevertheless revered by a number of Christian denominations.
Turin is an important cultural and artistic center of northern Italy, as well as being the headquarters of the Fiat automotive corporation-it's known as "the Detroit of Italy" and is one of Detroit, Michigan's sister cities.
9. Large Mexican city on the California border.

Answer: Tijuana

Tijuana is just over the Mexican border from greater metropolitan San Diego, California. Tijuana's metro area has in excess of 1.3 million people. The city is famous for tourism, especially for "day trippers", given its border location. The surrounding area is also a popular retirement choice for Americans.

In the early 21st century, however, tourism has suffered due to the presence of violent conflict amongst drug cartels.
10. Canadian city on the shores of Lake Superior.

Answer: Thunder Bay

Thunder Bay is in the westerly portion of the province of Ontario, about 70 miles by road from the international border with Minnesota, USA. The area was settled by French fur traders in the late 1600s, but did not acquire its current name until 1970, when it was formed by the merger of two cities, Port Arthur and Fort William. Thunder Bay has a large Finnish-speaking contingent; the first of its four sister cities is Seinäjoki, Finland. That relationship began in 1974.
