Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From London, I want to visit the seaside for the weekend. I head off in a southerly direction, but I'm going the wrong way to reach one of these seaside destinations. Which one?

Answer: Blackpool

To reach Blackpool, Lancashire, I should head in a north westerly direction from London. The attractions include the famous Blackpool Illuminations, three seaside piers jutting into the Irish Sea, a circus, a zoo and many other attractions. The other three towns are all in Sussex, on the Channel coast, south of London.
2. Leaving the south coast of England near Dover, I head off towards Prague, sticking to an eastward course after landing in Calais. Which of these countries won't I travel through, because I'm going the wrong way to do that?

Answer: Denmark

Denmark is well to the north of my chosen route, which passes through a small part of northern France from Calais to the Belgian border, north of Ypres in Belgium and just south of Cologne in Germany on the way to the capital of the Czech Republic.
3. Prague is a beautiful city, but business takes me to Bialystok near the Polish border with Belarus. If I take a directly north easterly route from Prague, which city won't lie close to my path?

Answer: Bratislava

I'm travelling the wrong way to visit Bratislava in Slovakia, which lies to the southeast of Prague. The three Polish cities all lie close enough to my "as the crow flies" route for a side trip to each one to be quite feasible.
4. Having concluded my business in Bialystok, I fly directly to Helsinki in Finland. Which country won't I fly over, because I'm going the wrong way?

Answer: Ukraine

Flying northward from Poland to Helsinki my aeroplane passes over all three of the Baltic states. To reach Ukraine I have to travel in a southerly direction, south easterly if I want to visit Kiev, the capital.
5. After Helsinki, I want some sunshine, so I travel by the most direct route possible to Dubrovnik in Croatia. I'm going the wrong way to look down upon which of these countries?

Answer: Sweden

Sweden is well to the west of my route, which is slightly west of due south. I also fly over all three Baltic states, and parts of Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina to reach Dubrovnik on the Adriatic Sea, part of Croatia's Dalmatian coast.
6. From Dubrovnik I drive to Belgrade to board a vessel for a Danube cruise to Vienna. Which city will I not visit, as I am going the wrong way?

Answer: Bucharest

To see Bucharest, Romania, I must go in the opposite direction, toward the Black Sea. Budapest in Hungary is actually two cities, on either side of the river, connected by numerous bridges. Vukovar in Croatia was the scene of fighting in the 1990s, and sits where the Vuka River meets the Danube.
7. As I weave my way in a south westerly direction toward Marseille from Vienna, I pass close to three of these four former Winter Olympics sites. Which one am I going the wrong way to visit?

Answer: Sarajevo

Sarajevo, in Bosnia-Herzegovina, is in a south easterly direction from Vienna. It hosted the 1984 games, before the breakup of Yugoslavia. Innsbruck in Austria hosted the games in 1964 and 1976. Grenoble, France hosted in 1968 and Turin, Italy in 2006.
8. I have always wanted to see the Rock of Gibraltar, so from Marseille I head there in as direct a line as possible. Which of these Spanish cities am I going the wrong way to see on my journey?

Answer: Bilbao

Bilbao, in the Pais Vasco is far to the north of the route I am taking to reach Gibraltar, but the other three cities all lie close to the south westerly path that I have chosen. It would be a shame to miss Gaudi's architecture in Barcelona, or the Alhambra in Granada. Malaga is mostly sand and sunshine, but also the birthplace of Pablo Picasso.
9. Flying directly north from Gibraltar to visit the Normandy beaches near Arromanches and Caen, I will be going the wrong way to pass over which of these places?

Answer: Paris

Deauville airport is the closest to Arromanches, and while there may not be any scheduled flights to it from Gibraltar it is the destination for my imagined journey. Paris is a long way off to my east, but I'll be able to see Madrid, Bilbao and the waters of the Bay of Biscay from my window before arriving in French airspace.
10. Heading northwards across the English Channel from the Normandy coast, I'm heading in the right direction to make landfall at three of these English towns. Which one am I going the wrong way to make it my primary destination, as it is far off to the north and east?

Answer: Lowestoft

Lowestoft, in Suffolk, is on the North Sea and I'd have to sail far off course to reach it. The other three are all in Sussex and on the Channel coast. It's just a short train ride back to my starting point in London from any one of them.
