Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the nicknames for the expansive state of Arizona deals with which of the following elements?

Answer: Copper

Arizona leads the United States in the production of copper. One of the places you can visit is the Bisbee mine, which is located in Tombstone Canyon and is sometimes called "The Queen of the Copper Mines". At one time this mine and its surrounding town was the largest city between Saint Louis and San Francisco.
2. Which of the following mountains is the highest point in the expansive state of Arizona?

Answer: Humphreys Peak

AT a height of over 12,000 ft., Humphreys Peak is the highest point in the state of Arizona. Many people mistakenly think the state is an area of flat desert, but there are many different geographic areas to found. Humphreys Peak is part of a group of over 600 extinct volcanos known in the area as the San Francisco Peaks.

It is a popular hiking area with steep, rocky trails. This lightning prone region is located in the northern part of the state. Before you decide to go hiking here, always check the weather report: the area can have temperatures of 100 degrees, heavy storms, and snow.

The other three options are all located in the state of Wyoming.
3. One of the most interesting spots to visit in Arizona is this giant hole in the ground known as which of the following?

Answer: Meteor Crater

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Arizona is Meteor Crater. It is thought to have been created approximately 50,000 years ago. At the time of impact, it is believed to have been a grassy plain full of animal life such as woolly mammoths and giant sloths. Meteor Crater is open all year around and is a wonderful location for a vacation involving camping and hiking.
4. The Alpine ski resort near Yuma, known as the Arizona Snowbowl, was the home of the 1964 Winter Olympics.

Answer: False

The Arizona Snowbowl is a scenic ski resort north of Flagstaff, in some of the prettiest areas of the state. It has never been the home of the Winter Olympics. It is home to an 18 hole golf course and a beautiful scenic sky ride that runs all year around. Many of those who enjoy snow skiing would consider the Snowbowl to be Bucket List worthy.
5. Another activity you can enjoy while visiting Arizona is to go to Phoenix and watch which professional baseball team play their home games?

Answer: Arizona Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks became part of the MLB in 1998. They quickly became a competitive team, taking only four years to win a championship. The other options were hockey teams. In 2016, the team played their home games at Chase Field in downtown Phoenix. This ground-breaking field was the first American stadium to sport both a retractable roof and a natural grass playing field.
6. Why does the Montezuma Castle National Monument face south?

Answer: To get warmth from the sun.

Montezuma's Castle is the ruins of a five-story cliff dwelling located in Beaver Creek Canyon. Like most cliff dwellings found in the American Southwest, the dwelling faces south in order to catch and retain the greatest possible warmth from the sun. There is more than just this one ruin at this National Monument and the culture responsible for their creation is a matter of scholarly debate. Populations in the area broke down in the 15th century, possibly through disease, extended drought, the exhaustion of farmland, or possibly a combination of all three.

They have left the ruins of cities scattered around the state.
7. Which of the following things can you visit while touring Lake Havasu, Arizona?

Answer: London Bridge

In 1962, the 131-year-old London Bridge was found to be sinking into the Thames River. It was simply unable to handle the heavy traffic. It was decided that the bridge would be torn down and was sold to the city of Lake Havasu, Arizona, which resurrected the bridge, brick by brick, in 1971.

This unique town has a taste of England throughout which is rather unusual in the middle of cowboy country. You will be able to get bangers and mash if you want, or a large T-Bone steak.
8. What do the towns Pioneer, Azurite, and Doke have in common?

Answer: They are all ghost towns

These three towns are just a few of the many ghost towns found throughout the state of Arizona. These old towns, like most ghost towns in the state, are the after effect of mines that closed down. Most of these towns can be visited, and there are tours that are designed to take you on ghost town tours throughout the state.
9. The Saguaro National Park is a wonderful spot to visit. From where did it get its name?

Answer: It is home to saguaro cactus.

The saguaro cactus can only be seen in the Sonoran Desert. Arizona's Saguaro National Park is a wonderful place to visit if you love camping, hiking, and horseback riding. While you can visit the park all year around, you may want to check the temperatures before you go. I would suggest between October to April when the temperatures have cooled down. For those amateur astronomers, the night skies at this park are fantastic.
10. The Havasu Falls in the Havasupai Reservation are a part of which of the following rivers?

Answer: The Colorado River

Havasu Falls are a part of the Colorado River tributaries. They can be seen if you visit the Havasupai Indian Reservation. They are considered to be a part of the Grand Canyon. The falls, which are spring fed, run all year long. There are many waterfalls in the area and they are very pristine. Arizona is a state that takes wonderful care of their natural wonders.
