1. Which town in the Scottish Borders is the knitwear company Pringle based in?

Answer: Hawick

Hawick is the largest of the Border towns and is internationally famous for fine quality knitwear such as Pringle. The original Pringle factory was set up in Hawick in 1815 by Robert Pringle.

2. Overlooking the Eildon Hills in the Borders there is a viewpoint which was a favourite of a famous writer. The viewpoint is therefore named after him but what is it called?

Answer: Scott's View

Scott's View is named after Sir Walter Scott, a famous 18th century novelist and poet. He wrote a series of novels called The Waverley Novels. Scott's View was his favourite viewpoint and who can blame him - it's stunning!

The River Tweed is 97 miles long and is one of the best salmon fishing rivers in Scotland. The last 20 km or so of the river marks the border between Scotland and England.

Hermitage Castle is surrounded by a bleak and open moorland. In 1566 Mary Queen of Scots rode here from Jedburgh and back again in one day, to visit her lover, the Earl of Bothwell. The castle is said to be haunted and there have been sightings of a white lady riding across the moors near the castle. There is definitely a very eerie feeling surrounding the castle.

Floors Castle is home to the Duke & Duchess of Roxburghe. The house was built by William Adam for the 1st Duke of Roxburghe in 1721.

Hawick balls are delicious, peppermint boiled sweets. The recipe has been a closely guarded secret for 100 years.

The original site of the Abbey was four miles away but in 1131, David I, King of Scots, encouraged the Cistercian monks to found a new abbey on the present site

Answer: Robert the Bruce

When Robert the Bruce died in 1329 his body was buried at Dunfermline. His heart was removed and taken on the Crusades by the Black Douglas (Sir James), who, just before he was killed in Moorish Spain, had hurled it at the enemy. The heart was recovered and taken back to Melrose Abbey where the new king, David II (Bruce's son), had asked for it to be buried.

10. A statue of which Scottish hero can be found in the grounds of Bemersyde House near Melrose?

Answer: William Wallace

The statue was unveiled on 22nd September 1814. On the pedestal is inscribed: "Wallace, great patriot hero, ill requited chief, MDCCCXIV"
