Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Denmark in Western Australia is home to many beautiful species of birds and animals. Which of the following appears on the Denmark Shire Council entry statement?

Answer: Blue wren

Denmark is located about 50 kilometres west of Albany, where the Denmark River meets the Southern Ocean. It is home to wineries and close to the wonderful Valley of the Giants forest, where the last Tingle trees in the world can be seen.
2. What is the name of the huge trees that grow in the Valley of the Giants?

Answer: Tingle

Tingle trees grow only in the area between Denmark and Walpole known as the Valley of the Giants. They can be up to 16 metres around the trunk, and at least one measured up to 24 metres. There are three varieties of Tingle, the Red, the Yellow and the Rate. Marri, Wandoo and Tuart are also varieties of Western Australian eucalypts, as are Karri trees which grow to a similar height, but have a different bark, and don't achieve as large a girth.
3. There are many small shops and factories on the drive between Denmark and Walpole, as well as numerous wineries. Which of the following is NOT located in the area?

Answer: Margaret River Fudge Factory

The Fudge Factory is located in the Margaret River area in the south west of Western Australia. The Alpaca farm, Honey Winery and Cheese Factory are all in the Denmark area, as well as a Berry Farm, a Toffee Factory and many great wineries and restaurants.
4. The Bibbulmun Track, one of Australia's best walking trails, runs through the area between Denmark and Walpole.

Answer: True

The Bibbulmun track covers about 964 kilometres between Albany and Perth, and has shelters about every 20 kilometres. It takes around two months to walk the entire track, but many people complete small sections between two towns.
The track passes through the Valley of the Giants and you can see giant Tingle trees as well as many other species of eucalypts and wildflowers.
5. There are a number of great fishing spots all along the south coast. Which of the following would you be unlikely to catch in the area?

Answer: Barramundi

The waters of the Southern Ocean are usually much too cold for barramundi which are mainly found all across the northern part of Australia. Other species found off the south coast are pink and red snapper, species of tuna, mackerel and mulloway. People need to take extreme care when fishing from rocks, as the coast is subject to "king waves" and many lives have been lost when people have been swept from the rocks.
6. One of the best ways to view the Valley of the Giants is from the Treetop Walk. How high above the forest floor is the walk?

Answer: 38 metres

The Treetop Walk is a walkway which rises to 38 metres above the forest floor, and enables visitors to gain a different perspective of the size and variety of the trees. At ground level, a boardwalk enables those who are not able to manage the walk to view what is known as the Ancient Empire - a grove of giant Tingle trees, and part of this walkway is accessible to people in wheelchairs.
7. Fifteen kilometres west of Denmark is a bay with an unusual name. What is it?

Answer: Mad Fish Bay

Mad Fish Bay is a safe place for children to swim, and a good beach to fish from. I have not been able to find the origin of the name, but one possibility is that at the time it was named, a school of fish was in the bay, and the frenzy of activity resulted in the name. There is also a winery of the same name nearby.
8. One of the many wildflowers which grow in the area is the brown what?

Answer: Boronia

The common or brown boronia (boronia megastima)is one of the most beautiful smelling wildflowers found in Western Australia. It is possible (but not easy)to grow it in your garden, but other varieties of boronia are often much easier to establish.
9. Peaceful Bay is located about ten minutes drive from the main Denmark-Walpole Road, and is a safe swimming beach, as well as a starting point for other activities. Which of the following cannot be accessed from Peaceful Bay?

Answer: Abseiling

Peaceful Bay has a caravan park and chalets as well as privately owned holiday homes. Whales can be seen during the migratory season, and seals can be found about an hours walk from the bay. In spring, the entire area is rich in colour with wildflowers, and the settlement is very close to the Bibbulmun Track.
10. Between Denmark and Walpole is a bird and reptile park which also features a display of dinosaur models, including the infamous Velociraptor from the movie "Jurassic Park".

Answer: True

Visitors to the Dinosaur World are able to handle reptiles including snakes, lizards and frogs, as well as brightly coloured birds, and see models of dinosaurs from different eras. You can also learn about breeding programs for endangered species.
