This river plays a major role in sustaining the farming industry in south-east Asia. Which river is this? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. The longest river in Canada, this one originates in the Great Slave lake in north-west Canada and flows northward to meet the Arctic Ocean. Its large and marshy delta provides a habitat for several water-fowl, as well as migratory birds. Beluga whales are found in the estuary area near its mouth. Name the river! Hint

Question 3 of 10

Question 4 of 10
4. The world's eleventh-longest river, found in eastern Russia. Its source is in the hills near Lake Baikal, the world's deepest lake. For 7 months in a year, it is covered by a 1 metre thick layer of ice; hence, navigation is only possible from May to October. Which river is this? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. This little-heard-of river flows through north-east Asia, originating in the mountains of north-eastern China, and emptying itself into the Tatar Strait near the Sea of Okhotsk (the sea lying between the Kamchatka Peninsula and the Chinese mainland). In Chinese it is called the 'Heilong Jiang', of which the literal meaning is 'Black Dragon River'. Name that river! Hint

Question 6 of 10

Question 7 of 10
7. It's now over to China, where we have the world's fourth-largest river. Literally meaning the 'Yellow', the river gets its name from the yellow silt which it carries along with it. From 602 B.C. to the present day, the river has made 5 large-scale changes in its path! The current course which it is flowing was adopted only in the year 1897. The river often flows over the surrounding farmland, thus posing a serious flood problem. Which river is this? Hint

Question 8 of 10

Question 9 of 10

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The tenth-longest river in the world, this river runs through east and south-east Asia, in the nations of China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. Several cities are located along its path, including Vientiane (the capital of Laos) and Phnom Penh (that of Cambodia). This river plays a major role in sustaining the farming industry in south-east Asia. Which river is this?

Answer: Mekong

The Mekong originates somewhere in China, and the south-east Asian nations have created an uproar over China's plans to dam the Mekong in its early stages. Every year, the Mekong floods its banks, thus fertilising the soil; China's dams are likely to disturb this event.

Even though it is known that the Mekong originates in China, nobody is very sure about where its exact source is! This is because it is formed as a result of several small tributaries which meet in the mountainous regions. And so the quest for its source goes on...more on it here: http://www.shangri-la-river-expeditions.com/1stdes/mekong/mekongsource/TUA2001.html

Answer: Mackenzie

The Mackenzie river was named after the Scottish explorer, Alexander Mackenzie. In 1789, he followed it from its source in the Great Slave lake, in the hope of finding a north-west passage to the Pacific Ocean. Instead, he ended up reaching the Arctic Ocean. He called the river "Disappointment River" (which was rather apt in the circumstances!).
3. This river flows through the rain-forested region of west-central Africa and is the eighth-longest in the world. The river was first navigated by Sir Henry Morton Stanley (famous for the quotation "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?"). Which river is this?

Answer: Congo

The river Congo lends its name to two African countries:
* Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly called "Zaire")
* Republic of the Congo (much smaller in size)
4. The world's eleventh-longest river, found in eastern Russia. Its source is in the hills near Lake Baikal, the world's deepest lake. For 7 months in a year, it is covered by a 1 metre thick layer of ice; hence, navigation is only possible from May to October. Which river is this?

Answer: Lena

There are no dams or hydro-electric stations on the Lena; it flowed just as it did ages ago. Potable (fit for drinking) water can be drawn straight out of the river.

Answer: Amur

The landscapes through which the Amur passes during its long journey are very varied; they include desert, steppe, tundra and taiga.
6. This river-system is the fifth largest in the world, and is also located in Russia, just a bit to the west. It is an important water-route in the region, used transport lumber and grain. It flows northward to meet the Arctic Ocean. What is the name of this river-system?

Answer: Ob-Irtysh

Navigation here isn't possible in winter, due to the ice-formation.

Answer: Huang He

During World War II, Chinese nationalist troops broke the levees that held back the Huang He, to prevent the advance of Japanese troops. This resulted in a huge area being flooded, and 900,000 lives being lost.

The Chinese counterpart for the expression "when Hell freezes over" is: "when the Yellow River flows clear"!
8. Now up to number three, and we stay in China, with the longest river in Asia. Also known as the Yangtze, it has traditionally been thought to mark the division between 'north' and 'south' China. It empties itself in the East China Sea. Name, please!

Answer: Chang Jiang

Chang Jiang is the only habitat of the critically endangered Chinese River Dolphin, or Baiji, the most endangered cetacean (whales, dolphins and porpoises). These were once approximately 5,000 in number (20,000 years ago). Today, there are believed to be only 13. More about them can be read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_River_Dolphin
9. And now for the second longest river in the world, in northern South America. In terms of watershed area, volume of discharged water, and number of tributaries, this river is #1. The river also shares its name with the world's biggest online book store! Which river is this?

Answer: Amazon

The Amazon river is one of the main habitats of the Boto, a.k.a. the Amazon River Dolphin. Notorious for harbouring piranha as well, though...

At its mouth, the width of the Amazon is 320 kilometres! Many more interesting facts about this river can be found here: http://petsforum.com/MT/funfacts.htm .
10. And now for the king of 'em all -- the longest river on Earth! It flows northward in Africa, making a huge delta in Egypt, and emptying itself into the Mediterranean Sea. It is said to be the "lifeline" of Egypt, which is otherwise more or less a desert country. Every spring, it floods its banks, thus making the soil around the delta region fit for cultivation. Name that river!

Answer: Nile

The Nile river has been mentioned in the Bible several times -- Moses' basket was found in it, its water was turned to blood by God, the plague of frogs came from it.

On thing I must mention - the lengths of the rivers in the world is a very debatable issue, because of tributaries, lakes, and other bodies of water complicating the whole issue. In this quiz, I've tried to use the "10 longest rivers" as given in most of the sources I have found on the internet.
