1. Largest, by area

Answer: Alaska

At just over 665,000 square miles (1,723,000 square kilometres), Alaska is more than twice the size of the second on the list, Texas.

The top ten is completed by California, Montana, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Oregon, and Wyoming.
2. Smallest, by area

Answer: Rhode Island

Rhode Island has an area of about 1,500 square miles (4,000 square kilometres).

The District of Columbia, the US Virgin Islands, American Samoa and Guam are all smaller, without having State status.
3. Highest, by mean elevation

Answer: Colorado

Okay, Colorado does not have America's highest peak (that is in Alaska) but it has the highest mean altitude.

Interestingly, while the ten highest summits in the USA are all in Alaska, Colorado has 29 of the highest 50 and 74 of the highest 100.

Colorado's mean elevation is 6,800 feet. For all of its high mountains, Alaska only comes in at number 15 in the list, 1,900 feet. [Source: netstate.com]
4. Lowest, by mean elevation

Answer: Delaware

While California has America's lowest point, in Death Valley, Delaware has the lowest mean elevation.

The highest point in Delaware is the Ebright Azimuth, which reaches 447.85 feet (136.50 m) above sea level. The mean elevation is 60 feet.
5. Hottest, by average temperature

Answer: Florida

Based on state-wide average temperatures, Florida is the place to be year-round. It reaches 70.70 degrees Fahrenheit, 21.50 Celsius.

Hawaii has a higher mean winter temperature, and Louisiana a higher mean summer temperature.

The coldest, meanwhile, is Alaska. It averages 26.60 degrees Fahrenheit, -3.0 degrees Celsius year round.
6. Rainiest, by average rainfall

Answer: Hawaii

Hawaii is the rainiest state in the US, with an average of 63.7 inches (1,618 millimetres) of rain a year.

The top ten for year-round raininess is completed by Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, Arkansas, Connecticut & North Carolina (tie) and South Carolina.
7. Driest, by average rainfall

Answer: Nevada

Nevada is the least rainy state in the US, with only 9.5 inches (241 mm) of rain each year.

For winter only, North Dakota is the place to go to avoid precipitation, while in summer head for California. Remember, although it never rains in Southern California - it pours, man it pours.

Answer: California

With about 38.33m people at the 2013 census, California was the most populous state in the USA.

California also had three of the top ten most populous cities, Los Angeles (2nd); San Diego (8th) and San Jose (10th) - US Census Bureau, 2010.
