1. With a width of about 12km near its mouth, the Ob River is 10th in our list of the widest rivers in the world. Through which of these countries does it flow?

Answer: Russia

The Ob flows for (2,270 miles 3,650km) through Siberia into the Arctic Ocean and is the world's seventh longest river.
2. The Darling River is the ninth in our worldwide list of wide world rivers, at around 20km. Where would you find it?

Answer: Australia

At 915 miles (1,472km) long, it rises in northern New South Wales and flows to join the Murray River. The entire Murray-Darling system is 1,767 miles (2,844km) long. The Darling has dried up on numerous occasions. In the late 19th century, it was an important transportation system.
3. At number eight in our list of wide rivers is the Huang He. By what other name is it also known?

Answer: Yellow River

It is also one of the longest in Asia and has a width of between 20 and 25km.
With a length of 3,395 miles (5,464 km), it is China's second longest river. It rises on the Plateau of Tibet and flows to the Bo Hai (Gulf of Chihli).
4. The Mekong River is Number Seven in our list of the world's widest rivers. Where is its source?

Answer: Tibet

The Mekong is an important river for irrigation. At its widest, it is 26km. It flows for 2,703 miles (4,370km) through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.
5. Coming in at Number Six in our list of the world's widest rivers is one that is also one of the longest in Asia. Which of these is it?

Answer: Indus

The Indus is 1,980 miles (3,180km) in length. It is more than 30km wide in places. Its source is in the glaciers of Tibet and climate experts hypothesise that, as the glaciers disappear through global warning, there is a danger that the river may lose up to half of its water supply.
6. The Brahmaputra is Number Five in our countdown of the world's widest rivers. Through which country does it mainly flow?

Answer: India

From its glacial source, the Brahmaputra flows for 1,800 miles (2,900km). At some points the river reaches 37km wide. Around 130 million people live in the delta of the Brahmaputra and their livelihood, through rice harvesting, is totally dependent on the river.

The Ganges is 1,569 miles (2,525km) long, rises in the western Himalayas and flows south and east through northern India into Bangladesh, where it reaches the sea at the Bay of Bengal. It is up to 38km wide.
(The question is deliberately phrased because the Brahmaputra is also considered sacred in its lower reaches by Hindus. Brahma, however, is a male god.)
8. Number Three on our list of rivers noted for their width is also the longest one that flows through the USA. Which of these is it?

Answer: Missouri

Don't you just feel like singing: "My lady love, she stands a-waitin', far across the wide Missouri..."

10. Number One on our list of rivers noted for their width is, you've guessed it, the Amazon. Which of these is NOT a true fact about this mighty river?

Answer: For the last 70 miles of its length, the Amazon is saltwater

In fact, due to its discharge, the Amazon turns the ocean into freshwater extending many miles from its mouth.
In rainy seasons the Amazon can reach 190km wide.
If you thought sand dunes were implausible, well, they are below the surface but are up to 600 metres long and 12 meters tall. They gradually move downstream.
The Amazon at 3,977 miles (6,400km) is the world's second longest river (after the Nile.)
