Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This market town, famous for its castle, is known as the Gateway to the Dales.

Answer: Skipton

You can catch a train directly from London (Kings Cross) to Skipton. All the others can be considered Gateways to the Dales, but only Skipton has a castle!
2. The Strid is an infamous feature of which Yorkshire river?

Answer: The Wharfe

The Wharfe runs in a narrow and deep channel. Many people have drowned attempting to 'Jump the Strid' - don't do it!
3. At 2,373 feet, this is the most dominating, though not the highest, peak in the Yorkshire Dales

Answer: Ingleborough

Ingleborough, Whernside (which is the highest, at 2,414 feet) and Penyghent (2,273) make up the Three Peaks challenge. You must do the circuit in under 12 hours.
4. There are many caves and potholes in the Yorkshire Dales. In which rock type are they found?

Answer: Limestone

Limestone is permeable and soluble in rainwater. White Scar Cave near Ingleton and Stump Cross cavern near Pately Bridge are two popular show caves. Others are for expert potholers only!
5. This town on the River Swale is famous for one of England's oldest castles and a well known folk song.

Answer: Richmond

The castle was built in 1070 by Alan of Brittany, one of William the Conquerors most prominent henchmen. The 'Lass of Richmond Hill' came from here, and not Richmond in Surrey - though they dispute it!
6. This ruined abbey is located in Wensleydale, and was the place where Wensleydale cheese was first made.

Answer: Jervaulx

The monks of Jervaulx made the cheese from ewes milk - now it is made from cows'. Rievaulx Abbey is in the North York Moors, Fountains is near Ripon and Kirkstall is in Leeds.
7. Scar House and Angram reservoirs were built at the head of Nidderdale to supply water to which Yorkshire city?

Answer: Bradford

Bradford's drinking water was the best - that is before they began mixing it with Leeds's!
8. This Dales village is famous for its Cove, the ravine of Gordale Scar and Janet's Foss waterfall.

Answer: Malham

Malham Cove was once the site of a waterfall higher than Niagara - now the river runs underground.
Ingleton is home to the Waterfalls Walk, Grassington is the main village in Upper Wharfedale and Kilnsey is famous for its overhanging crag.
9. This Wensleydale village is famous for a series of waterfalls.

Answer: Aysgarth

The fight between Robin Hood and Little John in 'Robin Hood Prince of Thieves' was filmed here.
Askrigg featured in the credits of the TV series 'All Creatures Great and Small', Middleham is the site of Richard III's castle, and Wensley gives its name to the valley, and not the river, the Ure.
10. This famous long distance footpath crosses the Yorkshire Dales and was officially opened in 1965.

Answer: Pennine Way

The Pennine Way is 270 miles long and runs fron Edale in Derbyshire to Kirk Yetholm in Scotland. The Coast to Coast crosses the Dales, but was a later creation by the famous guidebook author A. Wainwright. The Ridgeway is in southern England, and the Lyke Wake is another challenge walk, 42 miles to be covered in 24 hours, across the North York Moors.
