Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The State of Utah is world-renowned for its snow, but which resort hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics Men and Women's Downhill competition?

Answer: Snowbasin

Snowbasin, which lies on the backside of Mt. Ogden, about 40 miles north of Salt Lake hosted the Downhill competitions.
2. Which of the following Mormon temples was the first to be completed in the state of Utah?

Answer: St. George

It took nearly 40 years to complete construction on the Salt Lake Temple. In the meantime, St. George, Manti, and Logan were all completed and functioning. St. George was the first of those to be completed. It took just more than five years to complete
3. Which of the following native American tribes does not have reservation lands within the State of Utah?

Answer: Apache

The Paiute Tribe inhabits several locations in Southern Utah while the Navajo Tribe's reservation is found in Southeastern Utah near Monument Valley. The Shoshone Tribe has a small reservation in Northern Utah but the Apache Tribe doesn't have reservation lands in the State of Utah?
4. What do Utahns celebrate on July 24th?

Answer: The arrival of the pioneers to the Salt Lake Valley

Funny enough, July 24th is Karl Malone's birthday so he would always joke that Utah held a parade every year in his honor but it is the arrival of the pioneers to the Salt Lake Valley that is commemorated by Pioneer Day.
5. Which of the following statements about the Uinta Mountains is not true?

Answer: They are the mountain range closest to Moab.

The Uintas are unique primarily because they are one of the few mountain ranges in the whole United States that lies on an East-West axis. They, however, are not the closest mountains to Moab. That distinction belongs to the LaSal Mountains, which lie just east of Moab and are spectacular.
6. What spectacular Utah landmark was shown to "white men" by Jim Mike in 1909?

Answer: Rainbow Bridge

William Boone Douglass was led to Rainbow Bridge in 1909 by Jim Mike, a Paiute Indian from the area. For years, the discovery was credited to Nasja Begay, but was corrected in the 1970's as investigations into the discovery were made. Jim was well liked by the "white men" and he, too, liked them. In fact, he cared for my Great Grandfather, Kumen Jones, when Kumen lost his leg.
7. Which of the following statements about Utah is true (as of 2003)?

Answer: Utah residents consume more jello per capita than any other state's.

Utahns consume jello at nearly five times the national average. Despite the perception outside the state, you can buy beer at a convenience store in Utah, although the liquid of choice is just as likely to be Dr. Pepper. Brigham Young was not born in Utah and Utahns actually have more computers in their houses than cable TV (60% to 52% respectively).
8. True or False: Brigham Young University is the oldest institution of higher learning in the state of Utah.

Answer: False

The distinction goes to the University of Utah which was opened in 1850 as the University of Deseret. BYU wasn't opened until 1875 when it was known as Brigham Young Academy. Utah State was opened in 1888 and Weber State was opened in 1889.
9. Most people know that the state bird is the California seagull and the state flower is the sego lily, but what is the state cooking pot?

Answer: Dutch oven

Of course it's the Dutch oven. For anyone who has been to a good Utah picnic or barbecue, the Dutch oven is the star of the show. My favorite dish is potatoes, but apple crisp is also a big treat. I've even seen a pretty good pizza emerge from a Dutch oven.
10. What is the only National Historic Site in the state of Utah?

Answer: Golden Spike

May 10, 1869 was the day the Central Pacific and the Union Pacific railroads met just north of the Great Salt Lake to create the first transcontinental railroad. I especially love the photo of the occasion that is now so famous.
