Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sphinx Observatory

Answer: Lauterbrunnen

Straddling the mountains of Jungfrau and Monch, the Sphinx Observatory is the world's highest of its type and it overlooks the Bernese Alps in Central Switzerland. Located three and a half kilometres above sea level, this destination is accessible by train tunnel, sending travelers to one of the highest train stations in the world beneath the Eiger.

The observatory is used mainly for astronomical purposes since its location puts it in a stellar spot for stargazing. That said, it's also a tourist destination for those looking to gaze out at the sublime beauty of the Swiss Alps.
2. Kindlifresserbrunnen, The Child-Eater Statue

Answer: Bern

Kindlifresserbrunnen is a bit of an oddity. While I wouldn't normally put a statue as a 'destination', it's kind of worth seeing because from its spot in the Swiss capital city of Bern, it makes up part of the Old City, standing atop a fountain in front of the Kornhausplatz, a plaza in front of an old granary. Considered cautionary, the statue depicts an ogre-like man eating babies which, while he has his hands full, also fill a sack next to him.

The statue was created in the 16th century.
3. The Matterhorn

Answer: Zermatt

One of the most distinctive mountains anywhere in the world, the Matterhorn rises over the town of Zermatt near the Italian border in Southern Switzerland. Forming a pyramid at its peak, its distinctive shape has been said to inspire the logo for Paramount Pictures since the 1930s. Because of its isolation, it takes a fair bit of time to reach Zermatt as most travellers get there via train from Visp to the north. That said, the town of Zermatt is a charming Alpine resort location, often considered somewhat on the expensive side.
4. The Cabaret Voltaire nightclub

Answer: Zurich

Although the Cabaret Voltaire was really only a major location during World War I, it became a cultural hotspot in Zurich mainly because its performances and the community that migrated there formed the Dada art movement-- people like Ernst, Klee, and Kandinsky.

The building closed in 1916 but passion for the arts never died; the structure was illegally occupied for many years before renovation and subsequent revival. It sits across the Limmat River from the Lindenhof.
5. The Port of Ouchy

Answer: Lausanne

Ouchy, built up to be a Lake Geneva fishing port, has since grown to be one of the more treasured vacation spots for summer travellers in southwestern Switzerland near the French border. Part of the greater Lausanne area, it's slightly south of the city and serviced by the extensive Lausanne metro system.

Interestingly, aside from visitors taking their strolls along the Alpine lake here, the region is also known for its influence in the Olympic Games-- the International Olympic Headquarters is nearby, also in Lausanne.
6. CERN, or the European Organization for Nuclear Research

Answer: Geneva

Specifically located in Meyrin (just outside of Geneva), CERN has grown to become one of the most famous sites of technological advancement in the world being the home of both the Large Hadron Collider (occupying a 27 kilometre long tunnel beneath Switzerland) and birthplace of the World Wide Web. Geneva, otherwise, is consistently ranked amongst the cities with the best quality of life in the world. On the French border, the city rests on the shores of Lake Geneva, surrounded by Alps, and is home to a branch of the United Nations and the Red Cross.
7. The borders of France, Switzerland, and Germany on the Rhine River

Answer: Basel

Found in Northwest Switzerland, the city of Basel is the third-largest in the nation and actually extends into the neighbouring countries of France and Germany; the three share a common vertex over the Rhine River as it passes through the city next to Saint-Louis, France and Weil am Rhein, Germany. Basel has an extensive history dating back before the Holy Roman Empire, so it took a great amount of influence not only from early Romans, but the French, (dating back before the Middle Ages, especially with their castles), and Germany. Basel's official language, like in many other northern Swiss cities, is German.
8. Switzerland's lowest point

Answer: Locarno

Switzerland is a relatively high-altitude country. Since the Alps make up most of the land in the nation, it's not unreasonable to turn a bit of attention to what could possibly be the lowest spot. Well, the answer is Lake Maggiore in the south. Found in the Pre-Alps, the city of Locarno is Italian-speaking and has a history dating back to early Roman days. Lake Maggiore, which stretches down into Varese, Italy, marks the lowest point in the country at 193m above sea level. For context, the Swiss capital of Bern sits at around 500m above sea level.

The highest point in Switzerland, the top of Dufourspitze, is at 4,634m above sea level. A bit of a disparity, eh?
9. Monte Brč, the sunniest spot in Switzerland

Answer: Lugano

Lugano is found in the far southeast of Switzerland in the Lugano Pre-Alps and shares the border with Italy (and Lombardy Province) to the south. Sitting on the shores of Lake Lugano, it's surrounded by picturesque mountains and is considered one of the nation's more summer-inclined destinations due to its beachfront. Monte Brč, found on the shores of Lake Lugano, is one of the many mountains of the area (including Monte San Salvatore and Monte Generoso). Like the others, it features a funicular to bring tourists to the top; all of the mountains in Lugano are much more accessible than those deeper into the Alps.
10. La Fourchette, a statue of a fork

Answer: Vevey

Vevey is a city with a delicious past. Found on Lake Geneva, Vevey is the home of the Nestlé Corporation, so one would expect the area to have a rich culinary history. They wouldn't be wrong. Vevey is, as such, the birthplace of milk chocolate. If you're in Vevey looking out over the waters, you'll probably see the 900+ pound La Fourchette sticking out of the water-- it's a fork and it symbolizes the obvious.

It's not the only thing in Lake Geneva either; in Geneva proper, the Jet d'Eau acts as one of the city's more famous landmarks. Unsurprisingly, Vevey is also the home of the Alimentarium, the Swiss food museum.
