Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As we walk due west from Toronto, we trek through Canada's most populated province before hitting water. What province is it?

Answer: Ontario

The province of Ontario makes up around 38% of Canada's population. Quebec province was second in population at around 23%. As far as total area of land and freshwater, Ontario is the fourth largest in Canada. Nunavut is the largest territory.
2. Following the way the crow flies, straight west from Toronto, we eventually will cross Lake Huron to get to land. What U.S. state have we entered?

Answer: Michigan

Due west of Toronto, after crossing Lake Huron, you would land in the central region of Michigan's lower peninsula. Michigan is made up of two peninsulas, called upper and lower. The peninsulas are connected by the Mackinac Bridge.
3. Northwest of Toronto is the province of Manitoba. Which two U.S. states make up Manitoba's southern border?

Answer: North Dakota and Minnesota

North Dakota and Minnesota make up the southern border of Manitoba. The other borders are made up of Canadian provinces. Winnipeg is the largest city and also the capital of Manitoba. Manitoba's Lake Winnipeg is the tenth largest freshwater lake in the world.
4. Traveling southwest of Toronto, you cross Lake Erie and end up in a U.S. city called Erie. In which state have you arrived?

Answer: Pennsylvania

Erie, Pennsylvania is the fourth largest city in Pennsylvania. It is situated near the northwest corner of the state directly on Lake Erie. It receives heavy amounts of lake effect snow each winter. I found it interesting that it is almost equidistant to Cleveland (Ohio), Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania) and Buffalo (New York).
5. What is the largest body of water Minnesota contains or borders on?

Answer: Lake Superior

Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes and is the largest freshwater lake by volume in North America. Minnesota shares Lake Superior with the US states of Michigan and Wisconsin, as well as the Canadian province of Ontario. It is the largest body of water in the state of Minnesota, covering almost 963,000 acres.

Its deepest point within Minnesota is 1290 feet! Fittingly, Minnesota's nickname is "The Land of 10,000 Lakes".
6. Heading northwest of Toronto we will reach Nunavut, Canada's northernmost territory. Can you name the province/territory Nunavut officially separated from in 1999?

Answer: Northwest Territories

Nunavut became Canada's third territory after it separated from the Northwest Territory in April 1999. The Nunavut Act and the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement Act were the two acts forming Canada's biggest territory. Iqaluit is the capital and largest city.
7. West of Toronto is a US state nicknamed "Big Sky Country" or "The Treasure State". Which state is this?

Answer: Montana

Montana holds the nickname of "Big Sky Country" because the only thing to interrupt your view of the vast blue skies are the Rocky Mountains. Also it is called "The Treasure State" because of the mineral resources this state holds. Gold, silver and sapphires have all been mined from Montana. Helena is the capital of Montana.
8. Let's travel to Saskatchewan in Canada! Which city (the capital of this province) is nicknamed "The Queen City"?

Answer: Regina

In 2014, Saskatoon was the most populated city in Saskatchewan, but Regina came in a close second. Regina is nicknamed "The Queen City", and the flag bears a crown on a navy and yellow background.
9. Far west of Toronto, we skip into the US state of Washington. What Canadian province lies on Washington's northern border?

Answer: British Columbia

Washington is in the northwest corner of the lower 48 states of the United States. It is bordered by Idaho to the east, Oregon to the south, the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Canadian province of British Columbia to the north. Olympia is Washington's capital and Seattle is its most populated city.
10. Yukon is the most westerly territory of Canada. How many cities are in the Yukon Territory?

Answer: 1

Yukon Territory has one city, Whitehorse. It serves as the capital. Under the Municipal Act in the Yukon Territory, to qualify for a "city", there must first be a population of 2,500. To be called a "town", there must be a population of 300; otherwise the municipalities are called "villages".
