Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where is Tristan da Cunha?

Answer: In the south Atlantic ocean

Tristan da Cunha is in the south Atlantic ocean. It is the largest island of a group of islands that also goes by the same name.
2. Just how isolated is Tristan da Cunha?

Answer: It is 1750 miles away from the nearest mainland

South Africa is a huge 1750 miles away. That's a whole 2816 kilometres away!
3. In what year was Tristan de Cunha first sighted by a European explorer?

Answer: 1506

Portuguese explorer Tristão da Cunha first saw Tristan da Cunha in 1506 - yes, he named it after himself! However, the sea was too rough for him to make a landing, so while he discovered it, he never actually set foot there, at least not at that time.
4. There have traditionally been few doctors or nurses on the island. Couple this with the fact that the island is so far away from anywhere else, what must the inhabitants normally do if somebody become seriously ill or injured?

Answer: Send signals to passing fishing vessels

The inhabitants must contact ships within the island's vicinity. Hopefully, the ill/injured person can be transferred to Cape Town.
5. Which travel writer mentions the rather unusual dialect that the inhabitants of Tristan da Cunha have in his/her book, "The Mother Tongue"?

Answer: Bill Bryson

Because the inhabitants of Tristan da Cunha are so cut off from the rest of the world and have very little outside influences to affect how they speak, they have developed a very individual and unusual dialect. This dialect retains certain characteristics from all of the nations that the first inhabitants came from - notably Scotland, England, Italy and the Netherlands. American travel writer Bill Bryson noted this dialect in his book on the English language, "The Mother Tongue".
6. In what year was the island given a United Kingdom postcode to make it easier for inhabitants to order goods online?

Answer: 2005

This development completely changed how the inhabitants bought goods. Without a postcode, it was very hard to order goods online. Can you imagine never being able to use eBay, Amazon, etc., and living in a community hundreds of miles from anywhere else?
7. What is the main settlement on the island called?

Answer: Edinburgh of the Seven Seas

Edinburgh of the Seven Seas is the hub of the island. Always referred to locally as simply "The Settlement", it is named after Prince Albert, son of Queen Victoria of England. He paid a visit to the island in the 1860s.
8. It is possible to take GCSEs (General Certificate of Education - British examinations taken by 16 year olds) on the island. Historically, how have the results been?

Answer: They are below average

The poor results can probably be put down to lack of teachers and study resources. The results are in comparison to test-takers from the UK.
9. How many return trips by ship from South Africa are usually scheduled to take place each year on Tristan?

Answer: 9

With no airport, the only way to get to the island is by ship. Just nine return trips are scheduled annually from Cape Town, South Africa. However, it is possible for more to be arranged in emergency situations.
10. Due to the island's tiny population, a lot of people are forced to marry their second cousins or other distant relatives. What problem has this caused?

Answer: A high proportion of the population has asthma

Many people on the island have asthma. This has been researched and been put down to the fact that three of the original settlers had this disease.
