3. What USA East Coast civil engineering miracle holds the distinction of being built by 400 Irish Immigrants using only common digging tools, horses and drags?

Answer: The Horseshoe Curve

Of course I am referring to the Horseshoe Curve. Located near Altoona, Pennsylvania and completed in 1854, the 220 degree arc in the railroad track and the constructed grade of 91 foot per mile made crossing (by train) the summit of the Allegheny Mountains possible. Pictures of "the curve" may be found at Wikipedia.org.
