Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. With a population of less than 2,000, it's possible that Ninety Six has more palmettos than people. What state can you find the town of Ninety Six?

Answer: South Carolina

Established in the early 1700s, Ninety Six, South Carolina, was first known as "Jews Land." Some say it was 96 miles to the closest Cherokee settlement; some claim it was the number of creek crossings to Lexington. Others believe it's an interpretation of "nant-sych," a Welsh term meaning "dry gulch." The true origin may never be known.
2. Due north of Twentynine Palms is a large Marine base; due south is Joshua Tree National Park. Which state contains all three?

Answer: California

Col. Henry Washington named Twentynine Palms, California, for the palm trees he found there in 1852; he was surveying the San Bernardino base line at the time. The Marine Corps base, with the same name, was established in 1952.
3. Three Forks, with no more than 1,900 residents, has more history than one would imagine. Which "big sky" state is home to Three Forks?

Answer: Montana

Three Forks, Montana, lies near the point where the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin Rivers converge to form the headwaters of the Missouri River, the longest single river in North America. Lewis and Clark named these rivers whose waters will eventually reach the Gulf of Mexico. A statue of their interpreter and guide, Sacagawea, stands in a park near Main Street.
4. Seven Lakes didn't meet the Wright Brothers' requirements, so they didn't even stop here on their way to their first flight. Which state is Seven Lakes in?

Answer: North Carolina

Seven Lakes, North Carolina, is close to Ft. Bragg and Pinehurst, where several US Opens have been held. Strangely enough, there are more than seven lakes in this exclusive community.
5. You can't get much further west on the great lake that Two Harbors sits on. Bob Dylan might have kept a boat in this, his home state. Which state is it?

Answer: Minnesota

Two Harbors, Minnesota, is about 20 miles from the western tip of Lake Superior. 3M started here in 1902, but nearly collapsed after mistakenly mining anorthosite instead of corundum for their grinding wheels and sandpaper. They moved to St. Paul and have thrived since.
6. The East Twin River and the West Twin River meet, appropriately enough, in Two Rivers, then it's just few more blocks to Lake Michigan. While not much cheese floats past here, can you identify their state?

Answer: Wisconsin

Two Rivers, Wisconsin, has been in a heated debate with Ithaca, NY, over which city has the right to claim the title of "birthplace of the ice cream sundae." Two Rivers states it started at Berners' Soda Fountain in 1881; Ithaca says no, it started at their Chester Platt's fountain in 1892.
7. Select the state where you can try to count a Thousand Oaks, or maybe watch the Kings play a hockey game.

Answer: California

While the Thousand Oaks ("TO" to residents), California, area was known to have inhabitants 2000 years ago, its first recorded history was in 1542. The entirely planned city of TO was incorporated in 1964, and, since it has stuck with its master plan, has experienced few problems similar sized cities have faced.
8. The monument at Four Corners is the only place where four states meet. They are Arizona, Utah, New Mexico and which other state?

Answer: Colorado

There are some two dozen Four Corners in the US. This one, however, is the most well known. It can get crowded at times, but if you wait patiently, you can lay flat on the monument with an arm or leg in each of four different states!
9. Oneonta, while containing a "one," originates from a Native American language. Which unfortunate state doesn't have an Oneonta?

Answer: Hawaii

In the Iroquois language, Oneonta translates roughly to "place of open rocks." In New York, these rocks overlook part of the town. Oneonta, Alabama, was named by a railroad official familiar with the town in New York. Oneonta Falls and Oneonta Gorge are also rocky sites in Oregon.
10. Seven Oaks is a small town with a population of fewer than 150. Can you pick the big state that it is a very small part of?

Answer: Texas

Seven Oaks, Texas, was named by an early settler after an ancestral estate in England. Incorporation was put to a vote in 1969, and won by a count of 39 to 19. It's difficult, some say impossible, to get lost in Seven Oaks.
