Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many countries have borders with Uganda?

Answer: Five

Uganda has borders with five countries. South Sudan on the north, Kenya on the east, the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the west, Rwanda on the southwest, and Tanzania on the south.
2. From 1971 to 1979, a cruel ruler governed Uganda. It is estimated that over 300,000 Ugandans perished during his reign and the economy declined rapidly. What was the name of this person?

Answer: Idi Amin

Idi Amin took power in 1971 after a military coup. Once in power, approximately 80,000 Asian people living in the country were deported. Their businesses were a major part of a weak economy, which further destroyed it. Throughout his rule, many Ugandans who opposed him were murdered. Different reports place the number of deaths during his reign from as low as 80,000 to as high as 500,000.

In 1979, Tanzanian forces along with Ugandan exiles overthrew Amin and power reverted to Milton Obote. In 1966, Milton Obote was prime minister and he then overthrew the constitution and declared himself president, ousting then president Edward Muteesa II.

This began a cycle of coups which lasted until the 1980's, one of which was Idi Amin taking power from Obote.
3. In 1976, a plane leaving from Athens heading to Paris was hijacked by Palestinian militants and flown to a certain Ugandan city. Tell me the name of this city.

Answer: Entebbe

Early on July 4, 1976, an Airbus A300 carrying 248 people from Athens to Paris was hijacked and flown to Entebbe. At Entebbe, all the non-Jewish and non-Israeli hostages were released and the hijackers threatened to kill the remaining hostages if the demands were not met. Israel secretly sent 29 commandos to rescue the hostages during the night.

In all, one Israeli commando was killed, 45 Ugandan troops were killed, and three hostages were killed.

Answer: Lord's Resistance Army

The Lord's Resistance Army is a rebel group founded in 1987 and ruled by Joseph Koney. The group has been blamed for numerous human rights abuses. Major combat operations began in 1991 when the Ugandan government launched "Operation North", an attack against the LRA.

At first, the government encouraged local villages to protect themselves with bows and arrows, however, the LRA possessed modern weapons, and that plan quickly failed.
10. Uganda has one of Africa's highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS.

Answer: False

Actually, Uganda is one of the few African countries that is aware and doing something about the AIDS epidemic.
