Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The C&D Canal connects which two bodies of water, for which its named?

Answer: Chesapeake Bay & Delaware River

The Chesapeake & Delaware Canal runs for 14 miles between Town Point, MD on Chesapeake Bay and Reedy Point, DE on the Delaware River. A company was formed in 1802 to build the canal, but is was 1829 before it was completed. The canal is considered the northern border of the "Delmarva" peninsula, shared by the states of Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.
2. Which man-made canal is the longest in the world?

Answer: Grand Canal of China

The Grand Canal of China courses over 1,115 miles (1,794 km) between Beijing & Hangzhou, China. Since the 1960s, the section from Beijing to Jining has been too dry for shipping, and the main navigable section of the canal is the 325 miles from Jining to the Yangtze River.
3. The construction of which reservoir required the dismantling, moving and reassembly of some ancient structures?

Answer: Lake Nasser, Egypt

Lake Nasser was formed behind the Aswan High Dam, built on the Nile River between 1958 and 1971. Between 1964 and 1968, the massive temples of Ramesses II and Nefertari were cut into huge blocks averaging 20 tons each and reassembled in a new location 65 meters higher than their original location and clear of Lake Nasser.
4. Lake Kariba, the largest man-made reservoir by volume in the world, is on which African river which also features Victoria Falls?

Answer: Zambezi

The Zambezi is the 4th-longest river in Africa. Lake Kariba was formed for hydroelectric power generation, and is over four times larger in volume than Lake Mead, the largest U.S. reservoir. The weight of the water in Lake Kariba, approximately 180,000,000,000,000 kilograms (200 billion tons), is believed to have caused over 20 earthquakes of magnitude 5 or higher in this seismically-active region.
5. This NASA photo shows clouds streaming through the lowland gap of an isthmus; which important global waterway is also in the photo?

Answer: Panama Canal

The Panama Canal is 48 miles long and saves 8,000 miles of ocean travel going around South America. An expansion project will double the shipping capacity of the canal and allow simultaneous two-way traffic for the first time in the canal's history.
6. Which U.S. state contains Hetch Hetchy reservoir, formed by damming the Tuolumne River?

Answer: California

The Hetch Hetchy Reservoir sends water to San Francisco, California, by a 167-mile aqueduct. The water from this high mountain reservoir is some of the cleanest in the U.S., making San Francisco one of only six cities in the U.S. not required to filter its tap water.
7. The photos are before and after shots of Taum Sauk Reservoir in 2005 showing the effect of a catastrophic failure of the walls of this mountain-top reservoir. Which U.S. mountain chain contains Taum Sauk Reservoir?

Answer: Ozarks

The reservoir is located in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. The reservoir was built atop Proffit Mountain, 5 miles west of Missouri's highest mountain, Taum Sauk, which shares a name with the reservoir. In December 2005, the wall of the reservoir failed, sending one billion gallons of water down the Black River in a 20-foot high wall of water, scouring the path seen clearly in the lower photo.
8. Which Southern Hemisphere country is home to the Coode Canal, built in the 1800s to improve water access to a major city?

Answer: Australia

The Coode Canal is on the Yarra River near Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The canal was excavated in 1886 and is named for the English civil engineer John Coode who is known for his water projects.
9. The mysterious puquious aqueducts are near Nazca, a location also known for a series of mysterious "lines". Which country contains both ancient mysteries?

Answer: Peru

Peru contains 36 known puquious aqueducts and most still function to make fresh water accessible in the desert. Controversy rages over when the puquios were built, either pre- or post-Colombian. None of the aqueducts have ever been excavated and neither they or the aquifers they connect to have been mapped.
10. What is the purpose of the structure at the right of the photograph, frequently found around dams on the Pacific coast of North America?

Answer: Allow fish to go around the dam

Fish ladders allow spawning salmon to go around dams, locks and waterfalls that block their journey upstream to the waters of their birth. The speed of the current has to be high enough on the ladders to attract the fish, but not so high that they can't swim against it. The fish ascend by a series of "steps", thus the term "ladder".
