The "Rainbow Warrior" was a ship belonging to Greenpeace, an international group that was protesting against various things, such as nuclear testing. Just before midnight on 10th July 1985 while the ship was in Waitemata Harbour in Auckland, two explosives were detonated on the Rainbow Warrior, sinking the ship and killing one person, the photographer (Fernando Pereira) on board the ship. Eventually police tracked down the men involved, and it was found out that they were acting under orders of the French Military.

It is regarded as the first terrorist attack by another country in New Zealand waters, and the ship was unable to be repaired, so it is now used as an artificial reef.
