Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the capital of Sardinia?

Answer: Cagliari

Cagliari, on the south coast of the island, is also the largest city in Sardinia, with approximately 150,000 inhabitants. Based in Cagliari is Cagliari Calcio, Sardinia's football team, who won the Italian league in 1970.
2. What is the approximate population of Sardinia?

Answer: 1.5 million

Most of the population is in the major cities; Sardinia is very empty in some parts. Though a large region, it has a population density of 69/km2, compared to the much smaller region Lazio, which has a density of 308/km2.
3. What is the sea to the east of Sardinia called?

Answer: Tyrrhenian Sea

There are many beaches on the Tyrrhenian Sea in Sardinia, the most famous being Costa Smeralda, in the north, which attracts many tourists each year. Some of the towns in the area are Olbia, Arzachena and Porto Cervo.
4. What is the north-eastern part of Sardinia called?

Answer: Gallura

Gallurese, the language of Gallura, is quite different from the other Sardinian languages. It is similar to Corsican, and along with Sassarese (spoken in Sassari) it is not considered by some to be a Sardinian language at all.
5. What is the name of the 11km channel between Sardinia and Corsica?

Answer: Strait of Bonifacio

Ferries go several times a day across the strait from Bonifacio, in Corsica, to Santa Teresa Gallura, in Sardinia, and back. The strait is famous for its strong currents.
6. Prior to the redistribution of provinces in May 2005, there were four Sardinian provinces. What were they called?

Answer: Cagliari, Sassari, Nuoro and Oristano

In May 2005, the island was split into eight provinces, Cagliari, Carbonia-Iglesias, Medio Campidano, Nuoro, Ogliastra, Olbia-Tempio, Oristano and Sassari. With the four original provinces, Cagliari province covered most of the south, Sassari most of the North, and Nuoro and Oristano the east and west respectively.
7. What was the island first called in circa 1500 BC?

Answer: Ichnusa

Ichnusa is the Latinized form of Hyknusa, meaning island (nusa) of the Hyksos, asiatic people who rose to power in the 17th century BC and ruled parts of Egypt for over 100 years before invading Sardinia.
8. What is the name of the 8,000 famous archaeological monuments all over Sardinia?

Answer: Nuraghe

Nuraghe, circular stone structures up to twenty metres high, date back to 3,500 BC. Although most of them are in the south of the island, nuraghe have become an important symbol of Sardinia.
9. By area, Sardinia is the third-biggest region of Italy.

Answer: True

Sardinia does in fact have the third-biggest region area of Italy after Sicily and Piedmont, but due to the vast amounts of empty space on the island, Sardinia is ranked eleventh by population size.
10. What are the two most widely-spoken forms of Sardinian called?

Answer: Campidanese and Logudorese

Logudorese is spoken in the central part of Sardinia, while Campidanese is spoken more in the south. Nuorese, Gallurese and Sassarese are all languages, but they are not very widely-spoken. Thanks for playing my quiz!
