Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This large bay can be found in the Northern Indian Ocean. It shares a name with an exotic looking breed of domestic cat. To what Bay I am referring?

Answer: Bay of Bengal

The Bay of Bengal is often identified as the largest bay in the world. Some countries that border it are India, Sri Lanka, Burma (Myanmar) and Bangladesh. Very important to the shipping industry, and thus the entire economy, of the entire area are some of the large shipping ports in the Bay of Bengal.
2. Hudson Bay is one of the world's largest bays. It is in the North Atlantic Ocean entirely in which country?

Answer: Canada

Hudson Bay is in the North Atlantic and is very large in size. So much so, that sources dispute its "bay" status and allow that it should be a "sea" - of either the Arctic Ocean or Atlantic Ocean. Hudson Bay is also very cold and icy. Though it is a saltwater bay, its saline content is low; therefore, its freezing point is higher than most saltwater bays and will stay frozen more than most large bodies of water.
3. This bay though not as large as Hudson Bay shares many of its characteristics with that larger body of water. Also, labeled as a strait separating Canadian islands and Greenland, what is the name of this bay?

Answer: Baffin Bay

Baffin Bay is in a part of the North Atlantic that was reached by the Europeans in the late sixteenth century. One English explorer was William Baffin for whom Baffin Bay is named. By the way, there is a Baffin Bay in Texas, USA. It is an inlet of the larger Laguna Madre.
4. This bay in the Northern Atlantic is off the coast of Canada, near Maine, USA. It is so well known for its beauty that it narrowly missed being included among a 21st Century list of The Seven Natural Wonders. Which bay?

Answer: Bay of Fundy

Its spectacular beauty makes it important to the tourism of both the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The Bay of Fundy is also known to have an extreme range of its tides - which can mark a difference of over fifty feet in one day.

Many topographers do consider it to be the place with the world's greatest range of tides. The Bay of Fundy's ports and basins have a long been important to the global shipping industry, too.
5. This bay with a somewhat glorious sounding name is one of the very few cruise line stops for the continent of Antarctica. What is this popular, ice covered spot?

Answer: Paradise Bay

Visitors aboard a cruise ship can access Paradise Bay via inflatable boats. Paradise Bay is the site of a research center that is property of Chile. Also, it is a superb place to photograph penguins. Just seeing the impressive glaciers and ice cliffs as they contrast with the water is truly breathtaking.
6. Thailand can boast of one of the most stunning bays in the world. It is filled with beautiful caves, aquatic grottoes and limestone islands. What is this bay near the island of Phuket?

Answer: Phang Nga Bay

The world may not have known of Phang Nga Bay before James Bond made it popular but its beauty is certainly worthy of the acclaim. Some of its majestic limestone rocks (or, needles) are nearly 1,000 feet (300 meters) tall. Since their area was featured in the movie, "The Man With the Golden Gun" one island (formation) is even popularly known as James Bond Island.
7. Spanned by the famous Golden Gate Bridge, what is the bay on the coast of California which opens into the Pacific Ocean?

Answer: San Francisco Bay

The beautiful area around the San Francisco Bay is commonly known (in the USA) as the Bay Area. It accesses not only San Francisco but San Jose. Although there are many islands in the San Francisco Bay, probably the most famous (or, infamous) is the small island of Alcatraz Island.

It served as a federal prison from 1933 until 1963. Since the prison has closed it has remained "in the news" as a feature of many formats of the media and pop culture.
8. This bay includes the shoreline of the world famous tourist spot, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is said to have been discovered by Portuguese explorer Gaspar de Lemos. What is the name of this bay?

Answer: Guanabara Bay

Guanabara Bay is known world wide for its magnificent beauty. Early European explorers mistakenly thought the bay formed the mouth of a large river and its area was given the name Rio de Janeiro (or, January River). When it was correctly identified as a bay the city retained that name and the bay became Guanabara Bay.
9. One area of China is said to have shops with rent second only to New York City's Fifth Avenue in terms of cost. What is this bay that borders the Eastern District of Hong Kong, China?

Answer: Causeway Bay

Much of the area around Causeway Bay was once a fishing village but it is now a major shopping district. Shops in the area are known for their internationally trendy wares and the exorbitant cost of doing business there. Home to more than just retail, Causeway Bay is where much of the local and regional government and financial organizations have their headquarters.
10. It is known as the largest estuary in the United States of America. It lies off the Atlantic Ocean and is surrounded by the states of Virginia and Maryland. Which bay is it?

Answer: Chesapeake Bay

The word Chesapeake was believed to have been taken from an Algonquian (one of the Native North America tribes) word (broadly) meaning "village at the big river". More modern linguists believe it should have been translated as: "Many Shellfish". This would certainly prove true, because even in the 21st century Chesapeake Bay is known for its seafood production.

Its waters are a reliable source for desirable blue crabs, clams and oysters.
