Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Mediterranean Sea is one of the largest in the world, bordered by several countries and including a range of other seas. But how many continents does it touch?

Answer: 3

The Mediterranean Sea is almost 3 million square kilometres (over 1.1 million square miles). It stretches from Spain (Europe) and Morocco (Africa) in the west, all the way across to Lebanon (Asia) in the east. It also incorporates a range of islands, including Crete, Cyprus and Sicily.
2. The Caribbean Sea includes many islands. Which of the following islands (or island groups) is NOT in the Caribbean?

Answer: Newfoundland

Newfoundland is part of Canada and lies in the Atlantic Ocean, also bordered by the Gulf of St Lawrence. Cayman Islands is south of Cuba. There are thousands of separate recognised islands in the Caribbean, with Puerto Rico alone consisting of over forty.
3. The Greenland Sea borders both Greenland and Iceland.

Answer: True

The Greenland Sea is part of the North Atlantic Ocean, lying to the east of Greenland and north of Iceland. It also includes the Norwegian island of Svalbard, sits across the Arctic Circle, and the southwestern arm of the sea is the Denmark Strait.
4. What do the Caspian, Aral and Dead seas all have in common?

Answer: They are landlocked

Landlocked seas are a topic of hot debate among oceanographers; some classify them as lakes but others are comfortable with their classification as seas. As a result, there is no official definition of a "sea". The Caspian Sea, interestingly, is also classified as the world's largest lake.
5. The largest sea in Asia is known as the "East Sea" in Vietnam and "South Sea" in China. What do most other parts of the world call it?

Answer: South China Sea

This large sea (over 3.5 million square kilometres or 1.4 million square miles) is so named because of its historical importance as a trade route between Europe and Asia. It also borders the Philippines, Indonesia and Brunei.
6. What do the Amundsen Sea, King Haakon VII Sea and Davis Sea all have in common?

Answer: Location in the Southern Ocean

All three seas sit in the Southern Ocean and border Antarctica. The Amundsen Sea, named for Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen, lies off western Antarctica. King Haakon VII Sea, in East Antarctica, was named for the first king of Norway after they became independent from Sweden.

The Davis Sea also lies in East Antarctica and is named for an explorer, Captain Davis, second in command to Douglas Mawson.
7. The Sea of Cortez is an alternative name for the Gulf of California.

Answer: True

With a coastline of about 4,000 km (2,500 miles), the Sea of Cortez (also known as the Vermillion Sea) separates the Baja California Peninsula from Mexico. The wide variety of wildlife, along with its warm climate, makes it a popular destination for tourists.
8. Why is the North Sea so named?

Answer: It is in Northern Europe

The location of the North Sea is thought to be the simple explanation for its name, given that it extends all the way north to the Norwegian Sea. The northern aspect of its name can be traced back to Roman times; it was called the 'Northern Ocean' by Pliny the Elder in the first century AD.

It is also believed that the Dutch were one of the first to name it the North Sea due to its location relative to the Netherlands. The North Sea has also previously been called the "German Sea" or "German Ocean", names which were still in use as late as the 19th century.
9. Which of the following is NOT a real sea?

Answer: Blue Sea

Despite the possibly obvious name, there is no official sea known as the 'Blue Sea'. The Black Sea sits in southeastern Europe; the White Sea is within the Barents Sea to the northwest of Russia; and the Yellow Sea sits between China and Korea in the Pacific. There is a fourth sea with a colour in its name: the Red Sea is part of the Indian Ocean between Africa and Asia.
10. The Sea of Japan borders only one country (Japan).

Answer: False

The Sea of Japan in fact borders four countries: Japan, Russia, North Korea and South Korea. The sea is almost entirely enclosed, which means it experiences only very small tides. The name of this body of water is a topic of hot debate, with South Korea claiming it should be internationally known as the East Sea due to its long-standing historical name.
